Catfish: The TV Show

For those who don't know, Catfish was a documentary that came out in 2010 about a guy called Nev who fell in love with this girl online. The documentary follows the early stages of their online relationship where they'd message each other and talk on the phone every-day to Nev starting to really like her and wanting to meet her. But then....
as it turns out, the girl he fell in love with didn't really exist. She was a figment of imagination of a 40-something year old, nice, but very lonely and somewhat disturbed, woman.

Cut to two years later, Nev and his friend Max have joined forces with MTV to create Catfish: the TV Show.

In every episode you meet someone who's falling/fallen for someone online, usually through Facebook. In a lot of the cases they're talking every day, exclusive, but have never actually met - usually because one of them keeps making excuses... Leading you to wonder, what are they hiding? That's where Nev and Max come in and make it happen.

On paper, I realise how crap it sounds. Very trashy MTV nonscense... but I actually think it's brilliant.

The two guys documenting it are really likeable and seem quite intelligent. It's not at all as stupid as most of MTV's crap, there's no Ashton-Kutcher-type-host running around the place screaming "OH SNAP YOU'VE BEEN DATING A DUDE!!!". Instead there's some genuinely heart-warming moments, and if someone has lied, they'll sit down with them and find out why and it's just really.... sad/interesting/intriguing/shocking. I'd definitely recommend it!

Would love to hear other people's thoughts? :P

I've seen the movie, and I really don't think the term "documentary" should apply. Possibly the worst thing I have ever seen, ever. Will not be watching the series as a result.

Caught one episode with the chick pretending to be a guy, scripted and phony come to mind. You’d have to be pretty gullible, it’s MTV after all.

It's a massive hit in the US...this week it pulled in a huge 1.7 demo...beat everything on cable, and has done for its entire run. Season 2 is a no brainer....in fact, Teen Mom was floundering in the ratings but when it got paired with Catfish it got a big ratings boost.

Ergo the Teen Mom audience lap this stuff up....take from that what you will. Another hot for MTV is Buckwild....lots of controversy surround that!

Apparently the massive ratings have come as a response to the Manti Te'o fake girlfriend scandal in the States. Whole thing was compared to Catfish in the newspapers a few times, and now their ratings are through the roof.

I gave up to half way through season 1 and didn't see any happy ending. Did anybody actually meet somebody that wasn't fake. I can believe the show though some people really are gullible and naive.

My girlfriend was showing me her friend on facebook who is supposedly in love with a man from America. He has 24 friends, was home schooled and has 1 picture. She is on about going over to meet him. Some people are blinded when it comes to these things.

Catfish is horribly horribly scripted. That's all I have to say about it.

Why does Nev need his mate filming when he has the production power of MTV behind him.
It seems odd that 3 camera men, a sound guy and a whole production team film a guy with a small rubbish video camera following his mate around.

Could it be to give some credibility as its a "documentary".
    Seems fake to me.
