Genetics/breeding might play a part there with Stans cows, don't expect the above with JE/ British Fr etc :P (But serious going Stan, I had a look back at all your boards posts there afew days ago, gave me plenty food for thought when I had began swaying away from the whole Holstien high input/output setup!)

Don't be too disappointed with heifer performance. They have a lot to adapt to. We feeding 5kg at moment to fresh heifers. I am totally ignoring production but we will be watching condition carefully. You will have them at grass shortly and they will be ok. As you know most heifers will be in last few rows at milking when the cows start to calve. We just give them a double feed at each milking really helos a lot. We have a guy who milks his heifers once a day 'till mid April really helps condition, never tried it here only do with lame cows during grazing season

take easy give them a chance to find their feet-heifers usually only milk 60 to 70% of a mature anyway.it would be great if you get a bit of grass into them but thats not happening at the moment.you could feed more but it might only upset the apple cart-in fresh heifers 5 kilos is over half what they could be eating in the first couple of weeks
