Okay so I was driving home from college today on the dual carriageway and overtook a car doing 90km/hr in the left lane. By the time I was in the right lane and just past him I was doing 130km/hr in a 100km/hr zone. I was instantly pulled in for this by garda traffic core. What happens now and is there any way to get away with it?
    Cheers guys

If you were on a dual carriageway, there was no need to exceed the speed limit by 30km/h in order to complete the manouver.

Pay the fine and move on.

I don't think you have to exceed the speed limit by 30kph to safely over take.

    What did the Garda say?

You'll get a letter in the post next week informing you of the speed you were doing, an €80 fine & x no penalty points. No way "to get away with it". Suck it up & learn from it.

Your chance to get out of it was when you were talking to the guard. You'll get an €80 fine and 2 points on your licence, not the end of the world.

Cheers guys, forgot to mention, I also got a caution on the sun visor for it being too big by about an inch. He didn't say to remove it only got a caution. What would happen if I left it on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭Lawless2k12

Nope. Don't see anyway out of it tbh. Only possible excuse is if the overtaking lane was ending soon so you wanted to overtake quickly but that leaves it open that you weren't paying attention to road signs if that were the case... Only hope is that the guard doesn't bother sending a ticket but knowing the traffic corp it's nearly a certainty they will. Unlucky dude but technical error is your only chance and it's quite a small chance. Start saving the 80 yoyos now I'd say

It'd be that much harder to wriggle out of your next encounter with the Gardaí. ;)

Unless he knows a Super, that wont happen. And even then its unlikely after the PR disaster that was the penalty points scandal

It still happens, and probably just as much as before. Maybe less of a trail is left.
To think otherwise is just naive.

I remember just 2 months ago a mate of mine was caught with no tax, NCT and he was bombing it around the backroads (I admittedly was in the car... yes, I know it wasn't smart!). The guard was raging and took his licence. Came back two mins later and handed back the licence and just said "Be careful"... the joys of having a super as a father ay

So, how do I remove a vinyl sunstrip from the outside of the windscreen. I have a feeling it won't come off easy

I find it hard to believe that a Garda superintendent (or indeed anyone) would want his own child to be allowed to drive in a manner that might kill him.

Maybe heat it up with a hair dryer, then carefully remove with something that wont scratch the screen. Just off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure I've seen tint removed that way.

That is hard luck. Its a pity you don't live in Kerry.Apparently the Healy-Raes have increased the speed limit there to 200kmph so you would have been okay:rolleyes:

Tough luck OP, I was caught going pissing speed over the limit on the M1 where it's ridiculously low (60 kph !!!). I think it's more justified for me to complain about it OP :P but there was absolutely no reason to go 40 kph faster than the other car to overtake it. Pay up and suck it up, buddy.

I was sickened when it happened but I'm okay with it now still gonna hope for a technicality though :P
The guard did look at my licence so will I receive the letter or will the registered owner receive the letter?

Registered owner will get the letter, then nominate you as you were driving

I already have, the other thing I hated was the obsession with owning property, despite renting instead of paying mad money for a house. Ultimately that meant I had to emigrate having lost my job twice in 12 months, at considerable personal cost, including leaving a daughter behind. Try not to be smug about your own ability to stay.
In all seriousness, thats the world goes around, you other stand idly by or join the party.

Or you could call it corruption, and prosecute it harshly.
