Forest/Scenic long run close to Dublin

    Hi guys,

I run in the Phoenix Park most of the time and do my long runs out past Ringsend and either out to Dun Laoghaire or up to Howth (on dark evenings).

Kind of getting tired of the same city routes. Is there anywhere relatively close to Dublin, close to maybe Rathfarnham or somewhere where I can go and just head off on a trail and do 15 or 20 miles relatively easily?

Really need a change of scenery without spending half a day driving there and back.

    Thanks

    Thanks! This looks perfect.

Can I check though - is the path pretty clear or does it require navigation?

Looking at the 1st stage I can obviously figure out it heads under the M50 - but after that am I following signs, or using intuition(getting lost).

    Thanks

easy enough to follow. It's waymarked with the standard yellow walking man signs at all major junctions. You'd be doing well to get lost on the first 10 miles at least

    Check out www.imra.ie

A lot of the runs are close to Dublin. The marathon plod is a great 13 mile route, starting out at Marley Park, looping around the mountains and finishing back at the park.

The canals are another option. Not forested as such, but still pretty scenic. There was a thread on running the Royal canal recently.

Dublin Mountains Way - 40 odd km of trail/roads from Shankill to Tallaght.

Keep a keen eye on the little yellow men and be sure to follow those for the for theWicklow Way and not the "Dublin Mountain Way". Many a runner has headed off from Kilmashogue only to end up on Tibbradean. Claimed a few teams in the WW Relay a few years back.

    The subtly different signs:

    Also worth a gander are:

    Dublin Mountain Way

Yep, forgot about the short section that WW shares with DMW.

I fell victim to this, 3 miles gone before I realised, 3 miles back, race over!
