Tyre Wall Damage Question

    Hi,

I'm a long time reader of boards but a first time poster.

I'm bringing the car for its first NCT next week and although it's in good shape overall there is a little bit of tyre wall damage on one of the tyres. There is a small chunck of rubber take out of the wall, its not deep and and its not down to the canvas. According to the local tyre shop it's not dangerous and they wouldn't replacing it if they were oaying for it. Does anyone have any idea what view the NCT test centres taken on this sort of damage?

There's a set of Continantal seals on it and I've been quoted anywhere between €250 and €285 to replace it so I wnat to get an idea if I am going to have to fork out for a new one.

    Thanks in advance,

    S

Tyre failure is for the following:
1 Evidence of recutting of tread pattern where tyre is not suitable for recutting.
2 Incorrectly seated on wheel rim.
3 Any cut longer than 25mm or 10% of section width (whichever is shorter) and which is deep enough to reach the ply or cords.
4 Rupture in or exposure of ply or cord structure, tread lifting, lump or bulge caused by separation of rubber from cords or weakness in cord structure, or tread distorted or damaged.

Hard to say if you fall under those.
    Do you have a spare?

My girlfriends car passed with a similar problem a few weeks ago. Chunk about the size of the tip of a finger and a few mm's deep. Mechanic said it was fine and it did pass.

If it fails its a visual retest inspection, ie free and no appointment, if your sure its safe a bit of black mastic might disguise it enough to get by, or borrow wheel.

They do say you should bring the reg document, just incase they want to check the vin. Unlikely, but wouldn't you be p****d off if they asked for it? They asked me on my previous NCT, but not the one just gone. WHen I asked the receptionist why she didn't ask for the log book, she told me the above.
