    Hi All,

is it legal to purchase a car, hold onto it for awhile and then sell it without ever putting it in your own name?

    Thanks,

No? Change of ownership should always be completed. Very big trouble if it's not done and something "happens"

sher, all cars people buy on hp aren't registered to the owners name, until the final payment is made....

The person selling the car is supposed to post off the VLC with the change of ownership section filled in. The only time this isn't done is when selling to a registered garage, where you fill in a different form so as not to add another owner. If the owner doesn't post off the VLC, or fill in the garage form, then they are liable for all tolls and fines. Very few people will buy a car not registered to the person selling it.

If a consumer Tom buys a car off Dick on HP then the owner of the car is the HP co say General Electric.
But ge's name isn't on the reg cert

When Tom pays the final payment to ge, there is no change to the log cert

You are wrong, I've bought three cars on HP and my name has been on every registration cert I've had.

The registration cert is put into the new 'owners' name. The contract entered into gives the hire purchase company ownership and the power to recover the car if payments are missed.

We have to make the distinction between registered owner and legal owner.

Afaik the legal owner can change many times without affecting the registered owner. The HP company can sell all assets including the car you are using to another HP company. So while you remain the registered owner for the purposes of traffic law the new HP company are the legal owner of the car (they own legal title to the car).

I think you've proved my point here. If you buy something on HP you don't own it until the final payment is made. So the owners name(HP co.) wasn't on the reg cert

It appears we're basically arguing the same point, just picked you up wrong initially. My apologies.
