I heard an advert this morning on Newstalk from a car insurance company or broker saying that if you’re a younger driver and you can prove that you’re a safe driver you can get a 30% discount.

Would I be correct in saying that there is some form of tracking device installed in the driver’s car?

    Please say I’m wrong.

There is no way I could be right on that is there? Does Ireland not have any civil liberties groups? Am I the only person who thinks this is completely wrong on so many levels?

Please say I misheard it and that I’m wrong

Dunno about that one specifically but a number of insurance companies do have a box they install in your car to monitor your driving. It's completely optional however and can significantly lower your insurance.

If BB is watching us he's watching me read 1984, 'cause i love that book

I don't see how civil liberties comes into it.

I mean you're free not to install the box. It's not compulsory but if you are a younger driver and want to avoid paying more money in insurance (as younger drivers tend to have to do) then you have the choice to do it.

If you can prove you never crashed? Or maybe you get a letter from you Mum.

This will be mandatory in all vehicles in 20 years time

When health insurance becomes too expensive would you be willing to wear a collar that monitors everything you do and eat? So you can get a discount? If this carries on who’s to say in time you won’t end up wearing a collar.

    Calm down, kiddo.
The way a driver proves that they are a safe driver is by not ever having any penalty points, any previous claims or any other misdemeanours involving driving a vehicle.

I can see it happening, for commercial vehicles only. Private cars will be outlawed by that time.

Well they do have, y'know, health checks for people getting medical insurance already. You do know that don't you?

Jesus OP that thread title is fairly sensationalist for something that could've gone in the obvious things you only just realised thread.

Insurance companies have been offering this incentive for years. You're not forced to avail of the incentive, but if you want cheaper insurance it also doubles as a way to encourage you to become a safe and responsible driver.

Not to freak you out completely or anything but they've also had speed cameras on the roads for years that take a snapshot of your licence plate if you happen to be exceeding the speed limit.

What I'd actually love to see is technology built into vehicles that monitors your driving and alerts you when it detects you are driving in an unsafe manner such as trying to overtake by crossing a continuous white line.

I know there are cars that drive automatically using GPS technology, but I'd sooner prefer if the person behind the wheel was taught to be more responsible rather than taking that responsibility from them and allowing them to depend completely upon technology to do their thinking for them.

For young lads who don't want to be associated with boy racers, it's a great idea. Why would anyone refuse the chance for 30% off your insurance by agreeing to drive sensibly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,589 ✭✭✭Reg'stoy

Have no problem with these boxes, if I was a young fella paying €2500 on insurance and was told I'd save €750 by using one of these; surely it's a no brainer.

Some people won't have them fitted, others will. I don't smoke but for health insurance if requested they can ask for proof, a friend was refused his health insurance because he was too over weight; should he refuse stepping on a scale to show he has lost weight.

First they came for the communists and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they tried to reduce motor insurance premiums for young male drivers.
Then they had rat burrow through my eye socket in room 101 and there was no one left to speak for me.

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently.

Power is not a means; it is an end. The object of power, is power.

I love that book but there is a big difference here, the party is one singular power that monitors every aspect of people's lives. That's not the same thing as dozens of separate and in competition firms monitoring one aspect of people's lives.
    War is peace
    Freedom is slavery
    Ignorance is Strength

All information will have to be openly shared with the Party. If we look back in history we can see where large scale data collections we used in ways never imagined by the population.

Someone offers you a chance at the 30% discount and you start yelping about civil liberties?

It's not forced on anyone. And frankly, you have nothing to worry about if you abide by the rules of your deal.
If you agree to not speed in return for a discount, and proceed to then speed, that's a breach of contract and would render your insurance null and void if they found out you'd been speeding at the time of crashing.

It's a way of enforcing the rules on an age group that lies habitually (petulant teenagers, teenage angst, nobody understands me, etc etc).

If you don't want to be tracked then forgoe the discount. Jesus.
