US already has a massive base over there near Alice Springs, must've known the Aussies had some oil knocking about!

If we joined them, we might have some chance of beating the All Blacks in the rugby, might win a few 6 Nations aswell

Have you been to Australia lately?. I think we have pretty much joined them already.

It's shale oil, so not worth much. Also typically enough one of the comments below the story is complaining about aborigines.

the only downside with Australia is it's full of Australians.

it's worth 20 trillion Aud, how is that not much?

Extracting and refining shale oil is still quite a bit more expensive than pumping from better sources. The US has massive fields of shale oil which aren't being exploited for the same reason.

Which is why they estimated it to be worth what they estimated and not more.

It's not worth anything if you can't sell it. And you can't sell it while it's more expensive than other sources. So right now, and most likely well into the time when electric vehicles are common, it's worthless.

Also I can't believe nobody has posted this yet, tsk AH

Half the country is there as is, and look what they have just found..!! An estimated 20 TRILLION dollar worth of oil!! That's more than what Canada or Iran or Iraq has, according to the link.

Quick, let's all move over there before the US moves into to liberate Australia.

If you link through to the article, it says:
"Brisbane company Linc Energy yesterday released two reports, based on drilling and seismic exploration, estimating the amount of oil in the as yet untapped Arckaringa Basin surrounding Coober Pedy ranging from 3.5 billion to 233 billion barrels of oil.
At the higher end, this would be "several times bigger than all of the oil in Australia", Linc managing director Peter Bond said.
This has the potential to turn Australia from an oil importer to an oil exporter."

So if you look at the most optimistic figure, then maybe 20 trillion is possible. However not all the oil is extractable, either from a technical or financial point of view.
Also flow rates for shale oils are generally quite low, so not a lot of oil would be produced at one time.

Environmental issues also could be a problem.

Its all dreamland until you can extract it which is economically viable. Sure, we have trillions of oil on our land(fracking) and off our coast here. Same type of story, hype!

    Don't like statements like this.

I spent a lot of time over there, and tbh the Aussies (as a whole) are generally nice folk.

I worked for a Frenchman over there, an Afghan, a Croation, a south African, an Argentinian, loads of Aussie's .

I also worked for an arrogant Prat who ironically enough was the only Irishman I happened to work for in two years.

No doubt at all some Australians are arrogant, up themselves racists, but wait.......
Have we none of them here?

How about doing something for ourselves for a change, instead of blaming the EU, the Brits, the famine, the IMF, etc.? The eternal loser nation.
