Checked the IJA website and found nothing, and did some googling, but it seems it varies from country to country.

Also is there a standard for grading set by the IJA, or does it vary from instructor to instructor? If it does vary can two yellow/green/whatever belts from different clubs be at completely different levels then?

Thanks. By compete for, do you mean you must attend competitions/tournaments and win?

    \Sorry missed the orange

White , yellow, orange , green all granted awarded by the club coach.
After that you fight/compete for blue brown and black.
As far as I can remember
you need to win two fights out of 5 for blue and brown.
Rules on attaining Black have changed slightly to my time.So maybe one of the more upto date lads will advise

For blue and brown, it used to be 3 out of 5 fights but it is 2 out of 4 now, winning by waza ari (half knockout) or ippon (knockout).

For black, you need to get 100 points, which can be obtained by getting 50 points (five wins by ippon or waza ari) in one single day's competition or national grading, or by building up 100 points over the course of a year's competitions or national gradings. You get 6 fights per day at a national grading for your black and you get 10 points for a win by ippon.

Wow that's fairly involved and sounds difficult, provided they're fair fights. I like it!

You can only get a batsukan with 5 wins, you may only have one waza-ari win out of the 5, the others have to be ippon. So if you win 5, two by waza-ari you only have 44 points, and have to come back to compete for the remaining 56 points.

You only need 100 points when you are under 30, If your under 35 you need 75 and if your over 35 you need 50 points in total.

A brown belt can also double their points by beating a blackbelt in an international competition, including the Irish open.
