VW Polo vibrating when idle

    hey there

Bought a '07 Polo 1.2 comfort last week and my other half noticed that it was vibrating a bit when idle in traffic.

Called a few VW dealers and explained over the phone and they said it could be a number of problems.

I have a 3 month warranty with the car so i called the dealer I bought it from andhe took it in no prob and had a look at it. He said he checked spark plugs etc and found nothing wrong. He said as its a 3 cylinder engine it runs differently to my previous car; a peugeot 206.

Anyone have a similar experience? As my other half still thinks there is a problem

    thanks

Is the engine warning light on all the time or does it come on with the ignition and then go off as normal when you start the engine?

The 3 cylinder VAG engine can be very rough at idle though, especially of poorly maintained previously.

    Hi Nissan Doctor,

Ya the engine light comes on as normal when I start the engine but it goes off then. No warning lights appear on the dash at all.

It came with a full service history ; serviced at VW dealers. Thats why I thought it would be in good condition. is it something to worry about?

    thanks

Its hard to say without seeing it. The 3 cylinder engine won't be as smooth as a 4 cylinder anyway but if there is any issue or not depends on how bad the vibrations are.

    Hi

Do polos's suffer with dual mass flywheel problems like the audi's?I think its a common problem in passats anyway. Did they check the clutch for you?
My audi was suppose to have had a solid fly wheel put in but it still vibrates when idle. A guy I know has had a passat that has been vibrating like that for over 100000km and never caused any problems..His brother is also an audi mechanic and said it normal

Does it sounds like it's idling too low? Like it might be about to stall? How long had you been driving it before your other half pointed it out? What car did you have before this one? Some cars are just different from others, from the way the engine sounds, to vibration, to sound proofing. I've had people comment on the slight "whine" my engine makes when decelerating but I knew it to be something certain Toyota engines did, my 00 Corolla does it, as did a 93 Carina my brother had. Just a "feature" of the build.

As someone else said, a 3 cylinder won't be as smooth as other cars and if it was the case that you didn't notice anything might be wrong until someone else suggested it, it could be the case that there is nothing wrong. Just a situation of being used to cars with more than 3 cylinders that run smoother and vibrate less potentially. If the answer is yes to either off my first two questions though, something is probably up.

unlikely theres a dual mass flywheel in the polo but im open to correction. vw's and audi are notorious for an engine judder at idle.

Its hard to tell alright if its just the 3 cylinder engine i'm not used to.
I called into a VW dealer on my way home yesterday to let them have a quick look. They didn't seem to think there was anything up as not lights on the dash and it wasn't vibrating that much-but they'd have to do a diagnostic test to be sure.

It only seems to happen when i'm driving for about 5 mins and the engine warms up and then i pull up to a set of lights. The rev counter stays just under 10 when i'm in traffic. It doesn't seem like it will cut out though so I guess i'll just have to keep an eye on it!
