Claiming rent tax credits - confusion, will I get them?

    Heya guys,

I did read through the threads here and understood that all that is necessary is that i must have been renting from a private landlord before December 2010. Now I've been renting from private since August 2010 so all is fine there.

I send in my claim for 2011 and 2012 as i wasn't employed in 2010.

However, it just occurred to me that I only started working in may 2011 only and as I didn't get my first wage before the end of June (missed payroll for May), I didn't have to pay any tax that year.

Now I'm wondering, will I still get the credits for 2011 as in theory I should be eligible for them? I sent in the rent1 form but I'm getting insecure here. I would actually really need the money and am quite a bit lost at the moment.

Would be grateful for any help here.

You say you didn't pay any tax in 2011, so what difference does it make whether you get the credit for 2011 or not?? You will / should be entitled to the credit, but if you haven't paid any tax then there's no monetary gain to you from having that credit in 2011.

Well, i was hoping i could get the monetary value for them as they are unused credits that i should have but I guess that's not possible ;(

Well think about it, when you didn't work in 2010 you didn't get the monetary value of your tax credits (in addition to any social welfare payment you might have been receiveing). Why would that change when you were earning - tax credits reduce the amount of tax you pay, but you can't pay negative tax!

If you were entitled to the credit for 2012 as well, and you have actually paid tax in 2012, you'll get a repayment of tax.

I know it makes sense but I don't like it xD

I never received social welfare by the way, only moved to Ireland in 2010 and then looked for work, which i only found in 2011. I thought it might make a difference since I was actually working, just not having to pay the tax.

Cheers for clearing this up for me :)

If you pay no tax, you cannot claim a refund.
