    Hi

I broke a tooth that had been recently root treated days before I was due to my dentist for a permanent filling and crown. When I saw my dentist the very next day, she said that she couldn't do the crown herself as I have gum recession and bone thining. Apparently it could cause further recession and bone loss and eventually tooth loosening. She referred me to a specialist who confirmed the diagnosis with another X ray and advised that I have a post and core then a crown.
He priced the whole lot at 1280€. Now, I was prepared for the treatment to be more expensive than what my usual dentist charges but that is a whole lot more expensive than expected.

Considering the urgency of the treatment, I have agreed to go ahead with it. However, I will eventually need 2 or 3 more crowns on teeth that have been weakened by years of clenching (one broke years ago but was reconstructed with a massive filling) and I can't afford to pay that price for each tooth. Is this a standard price? And if a tooth needs a root canal (875€ is what I paid for it), then a crown, would it not make more sense at these prices to go directly for an implant?

    Thanks

1280 for a post core crown sounds in and around the normal amount. You will get crowns for a range of prices, just as the dentists laboratory makes crown for a range of prices. This amount of money should be top end quality.

The question of whether an implant is a better long term option is a controversial one, and not easily answered. I like to keep teeth that are savable, but I also like things to last a long time.....difficult decision.

    Why controversial?

Seems to be a greater awareness of Implants than there used to be. Did something change to make them more doable/affordable or something?

Is it not due to the fact that some implants require bone grafts before? Or that they might weaken the jaws structure?

Res Ipsa, this was the back lower left molar (I never had a wisdom tooth here, so it's the last one) and the root canal was performed by an endodontist as the roots were extremely long and my usual dentist deemed it too complicated for her skills. I don't blame her, it took 4 hours to complete :o

In that case defo get it crowned.
A post is rarely recommended for a molar as it takes away precious tooth structure.
A post is only needed in a molar when there is hardly any natural tooth left.
Ask is it possible to do without the post & that might save u a few scheckels .

Thanks. According to the specialist, the post is needed as about a third of the tooth broke. I guess it will have to be done on this one, but not on the others that I want crowned. Hopefully!
