Depends on where you want to buy, online you'll certainly find a few Core i5 laptops matching your budget. Either way, do not settle for anything less than a 3rd generation Core i3. Meaning no AMD, no Celeron, no Pentium processor.

    Currys have both for 500-550

so between those two the sony would be the better one?

    By a country mile.

Never mind the bigger HDD or extra RAM, both are easily upgraded if need be, with the processor you're stuck forever.

It certainly would be... if it was available. This offer has been discussed in another thread but apparently it was sold out (at least in Galway).

Seems to be available for home delivery

My brother-in-law bought one in Carrickmines on Monday based on my recommendation. Very impressed with it and ecstatic with 281 euro saving. (Buying this lap-top from PCWorld in the UK will only save you about 20 euro at Monday's exchange rate).

I,D go for the lower speed cpu, as in general it,ll run cooler ,Fan less noisy ,ie most people use laptops for music, video, webrowsing.
Obviously for gaming ,3d design , photoshop , faster cpu is better.
My laptop is very quiet ,fan comes on very rarely , cpu 1.2 ghz.
it has onboard graphics intel card.
I play games on my pc, or 360 console.
I just use laptop, for music, youtube, browsing the web.
Super fast gaming laptop= lots of noise.
Faster cpu laptops, with fast graphics cards, get hot, generally they tend to break down more, have maintenance issues.AT least compared to a 1.2 ghz cpu slower laptop.

riclad, would you care to read the original post then you would know that neither model has a dedicated graphics card nor are they "super fast gaming laptops". They're both rather basic models, only the AMD Fusion APU is slow as f*** and even basic tasks such as browsing the web can be a painful experience with multiple tabs open.

Seems to have gone up by 20 notes today, but still good value IMHO.

Seems everytime there is a discussion on Boards about an item in Currys, the price rises!
    Maybe I'm just being sceptical.

Not at all; you're being an astute observer of entrepreneurial economics laws in action. "As demand rises, so shall prices follow". :D
