    Hi there.

    Would need an advice.
I bought mazda 6 sport 2010 and i was charged 5850e!!! for VRT.
Unfortunatelly i don't have full ammount as i had unexpected spendings.
Is it possible to set alternative date for making a payment oustside 30 days or
even better would it be possible to pay it in monthly instalments for example?
    What are my options now?
    Thank you for advices.

Looks like you'll need to sort yourself out a loan!

I don't think there are any other options with regards to payment of VRT, it's something they're getting very strict on and if you've already registered it then they're already aware of it being here, so you can't hide it until you can afford it. :P

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the OP would be fine as long as the car is not used on the road, so you could potentially park it up until you can afford to pay it.

You'll be charged interest as well.

As above, anything over the 30 day period and you get charged interest... per day! (and it's not that cheap either)

As the op has already declared the car to revenue they have no option other than to cough up the vrt or face penalties.

Op did you not check how much the vrt was going to cost before you bought the car?

They might have charged extra for some stuff deemed as extras on the car that were standard equipment on the market it was originally sold from but are optional here. The quote you get on their calculator is only indicative and you could get charged more on the day you present it.

OP - get a loan, pay the VRT and then lodge an appeal, you might get some money back if you think the OMSP that they used was too high (if you can show prices for similar cars on car sale websites etc, that would be a good starting point).

    ^^What a wonderfully helpful post.^^
Your second ever on these boards (on this account anyway). Was your first as insightful? I couldn't be arsed looking it up.

You must now pay. Ive no sympathy. We all paid it. Too many people buying cars and then complaining about vrt as if they are the only ones paying this. It appears with the unexpected bills, you cannot afford the car. Get a short term loan, pay revenue then sell the car or keep paying additional loan and keep the car.

Does car not need to go through nct before it can be changed over? Or is that just older car's?

I didnt register mine as far as im aware but I went back again aftrr a while but it was a fifferent month. I was then charged less because the car was older. Probably wouldn't work for you seeing as its registered. I didnt think you could register until you payed.

@op, how did you manage to get the car registered without handing over all the money to the Revenue ?

@Viper, afaik the car must be registered within 30 days of being in the country, regardless of whether it is being used or not. The one exception is storage by an authorised dealer of their own stock.

Nice to see the usual boards high horse attitude by some people here. Why help when you can offer bitterness instead.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/vrt-guide.html

"If you decide that you do not wish to register the vehicle, and pay the VRT due, you must ensure that the vehicle is taken out of the State immediately, but at the latest within 30 days of its initial entry into the State."

Unfortunately there is no option for deferral. I would get a loan for the VRT then apply for an appeal if you feel like the charge may be too high.

Thanks a lot for all helpfull advices.

Was only hoping if there's some other way to pay VRT.
Ok,will have to pay in 30 days then.

Of course i checked VRT rate before buying a car,but as mentioned in op,i had unexpected spendings after buying a car(**** happens).

Been driving here for last 6 years and never stopped by Gardai, now with UK reg already stopped 4 times in two weeks :D

You've been lucky so far, if Revenue stop you the car will be impounded, or at best you'll have to pay what's due plus penalties on the spot, and I mean on the spot
I'd advise keeping it out of sight until you're sorted.

that'd be ok for motor tax, but not vrt unfortunately

had read that customs can even enter premises to impound

For VRT they can enter without warrant under the following circumstances

Provides for search and investigation by an authorised officer of any premises in which manufacture, distribution, storage etc. of vehicles is reasonably believed to be carried on, or where books relating thereto are reasonably believed to be kept.

So basically anywhere the car is stored be that driveway, garage etc

Seems they can enter anywhere the paperwork relating to it is kept as well

Looks like you'll have to be borrowing somehow. You only get 30 days to complete the registration...or get-the-hell-out again...not a perfect system but that's what it is...

    http://www.irishdrivers.org/dates-events/legal-challenge-to-vrt/

vrt. wat a load off ****. we Irish are just sheep following the leader and afraid to stand up for yourselfs. as for the scammers we call a government they are actively breaking the eu law and your own constitutional rights.. as eu member.s we should be allowed free trade off good.s and services. a vehicle from England should not be taxed under vrt nor should you be penalized for buying it.. i have bein driving a UK car for past 2years. its UK taxed and tested. i have my Irish liense for the guards are every time i am stopped over it next this stage i have lost count how many i simply say.
as a member off the European union i am entitled to drive this car. my constitutional rights states tat i am allowed use goods from a free trade European union. just like the free movement off people for work within the European union i am entitled to have this car.. then they state the finance act.. but officer the European law states i can and if you have to take this further to clarify this i Will happily go to court.. i have never went to court coz it can't stand up in court.. then till Will say they Will take my car. also they cannot take any persons property with out a court order.. they however request you out off your vehicle thus so they can seize it. simply ask for there court order to seize it.
i don't tink i am anything special or have any great power over the guards. i just have read into the law. the important law.s and have gotten tired off gettin ****ed over by my so called Irish government.

You could sell it as is OP, but you'll not do well price wise.

As he's not a trader, selling it is illegal.

Surely if you get away without paying it, the better it is for you.

Also illegally not paying an ilegal charge, that just sounds f**ked up to me.

One option - drop it off in one of the airports in the North until you have time to pay? They don't charge an exorbitant fee and when you have the money together you can pay it then. Obviously you can't actually use the car, but you've taken it out of the state, so should be fine?

    Or have I missed something?

Also illegally not paying an ilegal charge,
Can there not be one vrt thread without someone coming out with the gem of nonsense? Vet is not illegal.

I think the way they get there prices for the VRT on certain cars is stupid. Like if you want GTR skyline there cheap enough to clear but a VW scirocco is a whopper of a price and skyline is 2.6 turbo scirocco is a 2 litre turbo dont get it at all really

but VRT exists and when you get caught you will be paying it (still I think its stupid)

OP good luck with the car hope it works out, My cousin had evo 10 and NEVER cleared it and he had it 2 years and it was brought in from Japan brand new at the time just gotta be lucky I guess
