I'm doing a wash in the morning, must make sure it doesn't go in with the clothes, that would be a shame :p

    Cheers manmen.
Only things on my mind right now are:
    1. Shuffling hands.
    2. MSM
    3. 10 and 2

I'm terrible for leaving my left arm resting down on the gear stick so I'll just have to consciously keep it up for the next few days to drill it in. :p

I do that as well. Two other things that may seem obvious, but are easy to forget.

    1. If you have one of those RSA logbooks, dont forget it, so many people do.

    2. If you have external L plates, get a spare set. I had a friend whos L plates fell off on the way to the test. Didnt notice until the tester cancelled the test.

Anyway, may have gone slightly OT there :)

Well I'm checking before the wash as I've to go in anyway? Then it's 90 degrees!

I applied for my license like 3 days before 19th of Jan (date new licenses kick in). Couldn't be bothered to be honest to wait, don't see difference.

    Paper = damaged by rain/torn.
    Plastic = crack from bending.

Even my student card which is plastic card has snapped bits off and cracks all over it, gotta stop keeping my cards in pockets :D

I think you'll get the new one anyway. I read something from the NRA where they said they wouldn't be producing any licences from the 14th - 18th (to facilitate the changeover) so unless you sent it in before the 14th you'll probably get the new one.

New licences are being produced since Monday 21st - I sent mine in last week, my previous one expired the week before, just in time :D Nothing yet, I guess it'll take a few days to get everything up and running.

Nope, I got mine on 21st, still a red paper one :D

Mine was up on the 19th - applied a week before that date but havent heard anything yet. I'd say if ye applied and paid the old amount you'd get the old type licence if yours were up before the 19th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 765 ✭✭✭6ix

Paid the new amount but used the old form.

I was hoping for the card but if I get the old one I won't be too distraught - it's just a licence after all!

I thought that replacement licences would be the old type, and only ones that expire would be the card type?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,472 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

Who does the change apply to from 19 January 2013?
    • Those who have passed their driving test and are applying for their first driving
    licence
    • Those who are renewing their learner permit/ driving licence
    • Those who are replacing their learner permit/ driving licence
    • Those who are exchanging a foreign driving licence for an Irish driving licence.

My husband passed his test just before Christmas. Decided to wait until the new licences were issued, then apply. Meanwhile, the insurance was due last week. Explained the situation to the two brokers we got quotes from. Both were (apparently) fine with that.

Meanwhile, we called the tax office on Monday, as we needed to renew, and a copy of the full licence was required by the broker. As we thought, it would take at least two - three weeks until we got the licence. (Bedding in of the new system and all that!). Broker renewed with a copy of the pass cert supplied, but refused to give us the disc. Had to kick up a fuss before they sent it. Got the disc in the post this morning. Phew!!

Bottom line: Expect the licence in about two weeks, if not longer.

Applied for a replacement one on Friday last. I put down a change of address for the reason, and was told it was free for a change of address. I asked if this would be replaced by the new type or old and the lady behind the counter told me it would be the new plastic one. sweet saved myself 55 euro.

55 Euros, I think till I really need a new license from either; loosing it, washing it or needing a new one.

5 Years down the line I will be retro with my old style license!

If I somehow *cough* needed to get a replacement for my licence which has just over 8 years left on it, would the new one have the same expiry date on it, or would it start afresh with another 10 years?

I'm guessing replacement would mean literally that, but here's hoping...

Think if your paying for it in full it should be 10 year again? Think I heard of this not sure someone else way know better!

I gotta change my name on mine how much will that cost. (got married last may)

It seems no one actually has one yet so. ;) I smells a technical cock up and they will have to go back to issuing the old pinks for a while longer.

I went for the "lost" licence cost of €35. Lads those replacement licences only run to the expiry of the original licence. So a new 10 year period does not start over.

Also they are now insisting on a passport/other ID with all applications now. In view of this it would be very unwise to apply by post.

Would that mean I need my passport to be changed to married name before I can change my licence? That's expensive if so

I'm not sure that's the case. We applied for a new driving licence yesterday. Although it was in person, all we supplied were the new photos, completed form, handed the permit in and the fee. No passport was requested or supplied as ID.

Not necessarily. I never changed my licence over when I got married. All that means is the car and insurance is in my maiden name as that must match the name on my licence. My passport's in my married name. Made no difference.

No you wont get a "fresh" 10 years. Your expiry date will stay the same

That is not consistent then, and I'm not sure they're allowed to do that. We applied in Cork, and weren't asked...

Mine has an old address too and is due for renewal this year.
Wonder if I get a new one for free will it then expire this year and then I have to do it again and pay for a 10 year one?
