Hi, I've recently started drinking red wine and I am looking for suggestions on what wines are worth trying. My budget for wine is ~10€. The supermarkets i shop in are tesco and dunnes.

I've tried a few so far but the only one that i buy regurarly is Savanah merlot/Cabernet sauv from tesco.

    Any suggestions for me, thanks.

€10 can buy you better wine than that. Take the time to visit some real wine shops and see what's on offer.

+ for finding a good wine shop - the quality of wine for 10e will be far better than supermarket stuff, which is all mass produced. Better asking for a recommendation for a wine shop near where you live. Enjoy the journey!

Herer are a couple of suggestions for red wine from Tesco, at the moment they have Villa Maria Private Bin Merlot Cabernet 2010 reduced to €10 at the mo which is very good..the '09 was delicious. A good few of the Tesco finest wines are made by well regarded winemakers and are often worth a try.
I haven't bought wine in Dunnes for a while but recently the was an 02 Gran Reserva from Spain which was half price at €7.99.
If you have an Aldi nearbuy try the Toro Loco 2008 Reserva, very good for the price.

If you have the luxury of an independent wine shop near you check them out too but don't assume if the wine is available in a supermarket that it isn't a good wine from a good winemaker.....

Can you give any examples/pointers to nice bottles of red in a good wine shop for under 10e?

Well after the excise increase and similar producers increases it's getting harder to stay under €10 but they're still there. As I sell wine I can't get into specific bottles.

Actually I'd say it's a pretty reasonable assumption (unless you love mass produced wines). Yes there are good wines in supermarkets but they tend to be the exception rather than the norm.

Everyone has their own taste in wines but I find Tesco/Lidl/Aldi fine for wines. Lidl do a very nice pinotage for only 4.99. Never bother spending more than 7 euro on a bottle as I can't tell the difference once I go over that, may have poor taste but each to their own!

Get yourself to an O'Briens wines store and try Spanish red 'Protocolo' at 9.99.....you'll never look back :)

Kind of depends what you like. I used to drink a bit of everything but over the years find myself mostly drinking French wine as I often find the new world stuff overpoweringly fruity or full-bodied.

It can be a challenge finding nice French wine for under a tenner but one I'm drinking at the moment is a Corbieres called Chateau Vaugelas at €9.99.

The excise has only really started to kick in. Certainly, where I buy mine at Superquinn, the price of the average bottle is up around €2. As a result, there's usually only one or two bottles that are decent under the €10 mark. I'm finding I need to spend about €12 for something good. Your best bet is to see what's on offer. There's usually an offer doing something at half price. Just make sure that it is half price and not just pretending to be.

Superquinn do Vielles Vinyard Malbec (utterly brilliant) at 13.99 but every month or so, they'll do a half price deal on it, making it great value. I usually stock up on a case.

That said everyone has different taste in wine. You have to find the ones you like. Lidl's Australian Shiraz isn't bad.

I found the Protocolo to be very very overrated. Not much better then the Toro Loco from Aldi but twice the price.
