For Ireland to rejoin the UK, I.e the next prime minister of the United Kingdom of great Britain and Ireland could be irish, to set aside petty differences and accept we are already closely linked and wee could all prosper being together. Ireland would be a full equal and essential part of the Kingdom, it would still have its own parliament just as scotland etc we would have a stronger voice in the EU and irelands dept would be shared by the 70million population of the new kingdom. N.i and ireland would merge peacefully because the unionists would accept an unitedn ireland within the UK and the nationalists will be happy that stormont will conceed power to the Dail. We will also build a tunnel so you can drive from dublin to france and have a united corporation tax policy and ireland would addopt the pound and regain economic powers from Brussels.

    How would you vote?

should Ireland reform with the UK. 33 votes

yes to ireland reforming with the UK
    0% 0 votes
no to ireland reforming with the UK
    100% 33 votes

As we are throwing out suggestions which will never happen, I would vote no to Ireland rejoining the Union but would be more open to supporting an Ulster-Scottish Republic, there are close historic ties between the two and if all 9 counties of Ulster were to join it would have a population of over 7 million and following abdication from the Republic of Ireland Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan would no longer belong to a State with a horrendous level of debt.

I think Ireland should politically subsume the UK. The British should just forget about all that Britannia rules the waves rubbish. Dublin should be the capital of Ireland and Britain.

QE2's name would be changed to Éilís Windsaor and she could work in a post office in Mullingar as a true servant of the people of Ireland and Britain..

Ireland has been neutral since the 1930's has has enjoyed a relativly peaceful existence since. Joining up with the UK would open us up to terrorist attacks and drag our small nation into world wars which our small country wouldnt be able to cope with. Remaining a republic we don't cause anyone any trouble and arent subject to any terrorist attacks and we wouldnt have to worry what wars england get into with repercussions for ireland. Britain acts on its own. Ireland is seperate and not involved

Why do you feel that this hypothetical Northern Ireland and Scotland republic should steal 3 counties from Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,906 ✭✭✭✭PhlegmyMoses

Nah, wouldn't be in for that. I just feel too....Irish. Couldn't relate to the UK as some kind parent state. It'd feel a bit like the EU.

Nothing about stealing it, they would be offered the option of self determination to go as a united Ulster if they wish but they would be free to stay if they prefer.

Ah, you're one of those people who think Ulster and Northern Ireland are interchangeable words. Got it.

Nope, I know exactly what the difference is and I don't see how you could have made that mistake from what I said. I gave a hypothetical situation in which all 9 counties were to go, that is Ulster.

Lol they'd belong to a new state of horrendous debt. Even the English know they be better off without Scotland and northern Ireland.

Would hate to see it as it would mean a Premier League Club based in Dublin and drawing support from the loyal fans of Irish Teams hence ruining the LOI.
Every pub you would go into would have Sky news on all day.
Our national newspapers would have headlines about the Royal family being pregnant.
Not for me thank you very much.

 keep telling yourself that. to answer your question, N.I and Scotland could do whatever they want, but any counties in Ireland should (and would) stay part of the republic.

Rejoining the UK is a pie in the sky theory, as too much water has gone under the bridge since the seperation,
but I would certainly vote for re joining the Commonwealth should the vote ever arise.

Leaving the Commonwealth was akin to throwing the baby out with the bathwater IMO.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Yes, but highly unlikely, as there's 50 odd million Brittons and only 6 million of us (even including Northern Irish Amglicans. Dream on OP

It would have its advantages and disadvantages. I would vote no simply because it would be a bit embarrassing coming back after 100 years broke and in a bit of a mess.

Some type of federation of equals might work because the people of both islands are basically the same anyway. I couldn't see it as acceptable all our taxes going off to London and them deciding how to use the money and throwing us some pocket money to run things here. I also couldn't see the queen being an acceptable head of state though for a lot of irish people.

What do you mean, sure didn't we get a few slithers of land in Connaught to grow spuds in. What more would you want.

I'm not a fan of monarchies, even be they largely symbolic, the whole house of Lords silliness (even with the reforms made) is well, a little silly, if I could be so redundantly redundant.

But a republican federation of Ireland, NI, Scotland, Wales and England... preferably one with a bill of rights near enough to the UNDHR, and direct democracy. I think that'd be quite nice.

I wouldn't stop there really, I think I'd like to see the whole UN a direct democracy based federation, and all that goes with that, free work and travel and residency throughout etc, with the (suitably altered) UNDHR being a binding document and it's signing and adherence to a condition for entry.

I'm sure lots of people think the above is abominable though. But it's what I'd like to see personally. Think it'd solve an awful lot of problems the world faces. Perhaps create a couple of new ones that would have to be dealt with, but ultimately far more good than harm would be done, imo etc.
