    Hey everyone,

We are currently looking to hear the opinions of Irish engineers both in Ireland and abroad.

We would like to gather the opinions of engineers on what they believe are the challenges facing engineering in Ireland today and also their perspective on wider national issues.

The results will be compiled into a report which will be revealed during Engineers Week 2013 - 25th Feb to 3rd March.

FYI - This survey is expected to take 10 mins.

    Thanks for your time

    Done.

I'll be interested to see the results, particularly in relation to other Engineer's thoughts on the country's prospects for 2013. However I suspect that most are in the same boat as me, flat out working, not making good money and wondering when how many more years of this crap are left.

Of major concern is the extortionate prices charged by Engineers Ireland for membership

Have Engineers Ireland staff taken any paycuts in the last 5 yrs?

To be fair engineers Ireland have held their membership fees for a few years but I reckon the trend will be up over the next couple.

As for your second question I doubt you will get an answer.

What I would question though is how EI spend their money. Be it events they hold (for staff or members doesnt matter) or their add (tv, banner ads, newspaper write ups etc) which I think was a poxy waste of money if you ask me. I know someone who worked for the production company who said it cost about €300,000 to make.

Sorry folks, I hope you appreciate that I personnally can not comment (or have the authority) on the issue of staff salaries on the official Engineers Ireland boards account.

As regards memberships fees, again I cannot comment on setting rates as this is done at Council level. All I can say is that they have been frozen since 2008 and we have introduced payment plans for those who are still working but have reduced salaries and that we have introduced an unemployed rate also for those currently seeking jobs.

    I did the survey.

I get the feeling that you see it as almost a negative that engineers go abroad. I see it as a positive and to be encouraged in order to learn best practice, languages, cultures and a global supply chain.

    That's my take on it.

Me too. There's plenty of badly-posed questions in the survey, e.g., the "pace of technological development" is bad for traditional manufacturing jobs but good for software development, and there's no way of way of guessing what the net result will be.

Similarly, I don't think the Government should be subsidising FDI jobs, but equally it shouldn't be bankrolling Irish companies - it should just build the environment so that these can be sustained.

I'm guessing the actual survey results published will be very bland (engineering is great, times are tough etc.).

PS I've very suspicious about HRM (a recruitment company) and Engineers Ireland doing this together.

Surely EI could organised this themselves

Thought this might be interesting for some - Engineers Ireland released this week a report on engineering perspectives which is based on the results of their survey that was sent around recently. Some interesting findings in there.

Donal, not putting a mod hat on but there's another thread from when this survey was being taken, maybe keep the discussion in that?

I haven't read the whole survey yet but the headline conclusions (only 5% of engineers unemployed?!) looked very suspicious to me - mainly surveying EI members and then extrapolating this to the general engineering population sounds dodgy to say the least.

    Good suggestion - threads merged.

Why has Engineers Ireland been given a site ban?

Poorly worded questions with too many gaps where I feel a large number of people might fit into.

Nonetheless, interesting to see that 58% of people my age have received a payrise during the recession....somehow I find that hard to believe. However, if that is the case then where can I find a job like that?!!

Also interesting to note that employers throughout may be facing a backlash with regard to salaries. I'm awaiting the EI salary survey results before I tackle my employer on this one. Getting a serious pain in my hole with my current salary!

Its not in Engineers Ireland interest to publish anything else. This wasnt an independent survey. It was carried out with by two organisations with vested interests.
