I'd have said four too. Even the ones that have a bit of tread look like they are blistering/wearing fairly thin

I would have thought just replace the front two? The rear two look like they have a bit of meat on them still.

Check the date stamp on the tyres. If they're 5 years old or older, replace them.

What's the most common cause of that cracking? Looks like it's affecting the rear pair more than the front pair.

The front 2 are obviously bald. The back 2 are ok thread wise but the rubber is perished, the cracking between the threads and around the sidewall is evidence of this so either the tyres are old or the car has very small mileage as those Bridgestones wouldn't be prone to perishing early.

Having said that, I likely wouldn't change them yet if they were my own, assuming there is no other issues not visible in the pics.

    Old age and under inflation

Its just the rubber perishing over time caused by UV damage and changes in temperature. Using tyre shine regularly on tyres helps prevent this from happening.

Anyone got any good links for buying tyres online??

Cracking is usually caused by under inflation, bring your car to a garage and they usually switch front to back etc when you are getting new tyres, place down near sundrive that does nearly new tyres, dont wait though especially in the icy weather

You don't legally need new ones from what I can see although given road conditions I wouldn't take the chance of stretching an extra few months out of the front 2.

Check that the cracking isn't getting worse, but I would imagine its an old problem.

Use these markings as an indicator of legal limits:

And check for wear on the inner circumference.

Haven't bought from them myself, but I've seen them recommended.

That's the one that I couldn't remember. Will have to bookmark.

Just to add that I found Atlas to be quite reasonable the last time I needed a tyre.

Great stuff - thanks for your help guys - great advice.

Think I'll play it safe so and go for 4 new tyres - especially with the current cold spell......

This is why having a set of winters is useful as the summers can be stretched further. My summers are not down to the the wear indicators but I wouldnt have them on in wet/frosty/snow covered roads. So I put on winters for bad weather and will put the summers back on in April and get a couple of thousand kms more from threm before replacing. Further advantage is I have thenwinters for the current nasty snap.

The price for postage is quite reasonable, and I've never had a shipment stopped by customs. From within the EU so shouldn't be an issue.

Saying that, you do have to factor in the cost of shipping, as well as the cost of getting the new ones fitted and old ones disposed of.

I've checked twice in the last few weeks for different cars, and it was cheaper to buy tyres in my local tyre place. This was for goodyear eagle f1's in one case, and michellin's in another.
