Yet another insurance question

    Hi guys

I was in a minor collision recently, completely my fault-I went into the front of a mini bus..my car looked absolutely fine but his wouldn't start after the crash. The guards happened to be driving by so they took details etc...anyway I thought it wouldn't be too bad but I was talking to him today and he said he had to get the insurance company to tow it, apparently something leaked from the engine (i don't know much about cars!). He also said he didn't want to involve insurance companies but for some reason he had to.. I had to ring my company to make a claim but i was wondering if there is any way i can keep my no claims discount after all of this? I know people say if you pay the insurance company back you can keep it-is this the case? It could cost a lot though so might not be worth paying back!

    Appreciate any advice.

The only way you'll keep your NCB is if you pay the insurance company back, or if you have NCB protection. Worth noting your insurance is likely to go up anyway.

Thanks for your reply OSI,I was thinking that alright-I'll wait and see about paying the insurance company back depending on costs, only have 2 years NCB so I don't know if it'll be worth it in the long run but if the premium sky rockets I could be better off paying it...such a pain I should ditch the car altogether :(

How much is the other party claiming for? The only other option I would guess is to see if it is financially feasable to pay for the repairs out of your own pocket rather than your insurance company.

I'll find that out tomorrow when they ring me-i don't know anything about cars but from the way the driver was talking between getting towed, borrowing a car etc it could be a good bit. Plus would it not be too late to even have the chance to pay it out of my own pocket if both mine and his insurance company knows about it?

No, I'd a claim once which I paid myself, but my insurance company had a record of it, and my claims history states that I paid it myself.

Did that have a major effect on your premium? My insurance is due in february which is another thing to add to the list...

No it went down as usual the next year.

That said I'm in my late thirties and had a protected no claims bonus on my policies and three years no claims at that point.

Yeah I have everything going against me really-under 25 with just 2 years no claims bonus...ah sure I'll find out the damage tomorrow anyway. The one thing I can be happy with is that it could have been a whole lot worse, accidents happen everyday so feck it I was bloody well lucky..
