we booked hertz with ryanair last year, it was a great deal but you have to pay for a full tank of fuel when you pick it up, and return it empty. They don't refund you for any unused fuel.......

It is the opposite setup with aerlingus / hertz, the cost of hire includes a tank of fuel and you return it with a full tank. I prefer this deal as there is always loads of petrol stations near the airport on the way back to top up the tank.

Doesn't that depend on which country you're going to rather than which airline is getting you the discount from Hertz? As far as I know the Hertz policy in each country is the same (in that country) regardless of where you're coming from or which airline you flew with.

For example, I queried the cost of a car from Hertz at Gatwick and the Ts & Cs include the following...

All Hertz vehicles are rented with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank or a local refuelling charge will apply in addition to the cost of the fuel.

And here is the first line from the Hertz guide to car hire...

When you hire a vehicle in a different country, you need to know all about refuelling and the rules regarding the return of your hire car.

    http://www.hertz.co.uk/rentacar/car-hire/car_hire_guide/car_hire_fuel

What that tells me is that Hertz have no uniform global policy, it depends on which country you're hiring in so the OP needs to check the Hertz website for the country he's going to to check the local policy on fuel.

I rented a car from Hertz in Rennes last summer, flew there with Aer Lingus and used the discount code for car hire. I did not at all get the hard sell on CDW or other extras so it was a breeze, brought the car back with a full tank and didn't hear from them again.

    .

No, we are flying to france for two weeks at the end of june, checked both ryanair / hertz and aerlingus / hertz for flights and car hire.

Carhire through ryanair has a "Mandatory Fuel Purchase", and through aerlingus there is no Mandatory Fuel Purchase, it comes with a full tank and you return it with a full tank.

Just checked the ryanair / hertz to confirm that.

We have hired cars through Ryanair / hertz before in both France and Spain and were hit for the Mandatory Fuel Purchase, where when we hired through the aerlingus site there was no Mandatory Fuel Purchase.

Gotcha, so you pay the car hire company rate for the full tank and you lose out on any fuel in the tank when you hand it back. There must be a kickback there for Mick O'Leary, he never misses a trick!

Thanks for all the info, at least I know now about the fuel charges. It's still the best rental price as Aer Lingus don't fly into Pisa so will have to "suck it up" and make sure to return with an empty tank ..... Might just take a few extra spins around the terminal just to make sure :D

Have you tried Sixth car hire?
Ive used them before in Pisa and found them cheaper and didnt have to pay for a full tank beforehand either
