Toshiba Hard Drive Case Needed

    Hi

My Toshiba Satellite Laptop stopped working after some motherboard damage.

I bought a replacement laptop at the weekend, an ASUS and I want to transfer files and programs etc from my old hard drive to the new machine.

Was told I need a 'case' to do this as I understand I can't simply plug the hard drive into the new one.

Can someone who's savvy with these things suggest where I might find one?

Last time I was in PCWorld they had them for eur12 I think, cheaper online if you can wait. Check the type of drive (SATA(probably) or IDE (older)).

Your installed programs will mostly be easier to reinstall directly rather than try to copy over.

You can't just put a hard drive from one make of machine into another. The Toshiba Harddrive holds software (called drivers) which run the parts that are directly in that laptop. The asus laptops have different parts (CPU, Cd Drive, Graphics, Hard disk) and therefore the toshiba software would cause it to bluescreen over and over and over.

You need an enclosure, it essentially turns your hard drive into a USB key.

I'm assuming the toshiba is a Sata drive, as it's probably newer than 2005?

in that case you will need something like this:

    Sata Laptop HDD Enclosure

You will not be able to copy over installed programs, you will have to reinstall them on the new computer.
