If you had to choose getting a used diesel car which of the following would represent best value for money:

    BMW 320D 2008
    Audi A6 2009
    Honda Accord 2009
    Volkswagen Passat 140 Highline 2010
    Toyota Avensis 2.2 D4D 2010

The BMW, Audi I'm looking at have 50-60k miles, the rest have 17-30k miles.

What is the best in terms of reliability and economical and value for money if they were all around the same price?

    The A6 for me anyway.

    A6
    Accord
    320d
    Avensis
    Passat

    In that order

Reliability wise I'd probably say the honda, but the A6 is a class above the rest in terms of desirability IMO

Honda. The rest are a bit dull/common imo.

Having owned a 2008 passat and now a 2008 320d Id recommend the BMW. Passat is mind numbingly boring to drive and drives like a barge. If you savour a bit of driver involvement steer clear of the passat..

If reliability is at the forefront of your descision then the Accord from that list. Personally I'd look at the Passat CC over the regular Passat as the regular one is just dull in comparision. BMW has known problems with timing chains. Avensis 2.2 is not a great engine, not refined enough and just plain dull. A6 would be my second choice, in the right spec they tick alot of boxes and better value imo than a similar A4.

The Accord is the only one I haven't driven.

To put a smile on your face - A6
    For the badge - 320
For comfort - Passat or Avensis

Can't comment on the Accord, but unless the Highline has an AWFUL lot of toys I'd go with the Avensis as an everyday driver. It's easier to drive than any of the others. BMW's footwell does my head in!

It seems to be either the Accord or A6 for most people on here and people I have asked around, with the BMW 320 not far behind.
Has anyone here driven, owned or know somebody that has an Accord that could tell me what their opinion of them are?

I know a few folk with both older and newer Accords, and none had any issues.

could anyone tell me what the difference between the different Accord models, I have been looking and there are i-DTEC ES GT, I-DTEC EX GT, ES GT, maybe there are more but could anyone tell me the top spec and which seems the best?

GT specs are UK. Not sure what way they work, but the Irish line up was
    ES
    Type S
    Ex or executive

ES is the basic model, type S added half leather and cruise, EX gave full leather electric memory seats.

Would you consider a CDI C-Class?

the ex has a 03 honda new shape sine 2007, she was the second owner and never had any problems except the yearly service and thats after putting 120,000 miles on the clock and god knows how many more she will put on it before she sells it. The engine is so silent, when she has the car parked but the engine running she sometimes forgots the engines on. She came from driving bmw's before but reckons wil never go back. She looked at trading in the car and was surprised that the honda is still holding its value. Now all she needs is the money for a new one.

The Honda pretty much covers whatever you're going to do.

terrible diesel engine, poor fuel economy and not without their issues.

I would pick the Accord or the A6 IMO. I have driven all the cars on the list but those are my favorite, I love the drive on the A6 more than the Honda but there reliability is second to none. I have heard of some issues with timing chains and turbo's on the Accord but personally think that it is down to how they are treated. I work for an auction company and haven't seen many Accords going through, which is a good sign but I love when I do. I have contemplated buying one in the past but for tax reasons decided not to but it will be definately a contender for my next one.
