Maybe your taking the ducks off him too quickly and then not giving him enough praise.

Dogs like people get humors & do odd things from time to time.
I had the springer out this morning & he was flying. Best he's been & meeting good few woodcock. He was taking direction & going to ditches as asked to. Then I came to a nice patch with a 2 foot drain to cross. I wanted him to cross it & run the bit of cover. He wouldn't cross it for love nor money. Just stood there looking obviously understanding what I was saying. I got fed up which I shudnt have & just turned & walked away. I should have forced him to go but I didn't feel he was brazenin me out, he just didn't want to for some reason. Walked on heel for 5 mins sent him off again & no bother again.
Who knows what goes on in their minds

he just decided it was his and wasnt giving it to you the lads are def on the right track leave him have the retrieve a bit longer but the best of dogs do this usually more so as they get older thats why i asked his age and 4 makes sense your dog is very confident nothing you can do only cross over and take it but i bet this will only happen when the dog is over a stream or pond do you give him a lot of retrieves

Something probobly just gave him a bit of a fright, take it easy with him the rivers at the moment have a fair bit of water in them. As the Pointer man says dogs like ourselves can take funny humours sometimes.

its no thing so.. would be different if ya were throwing retrieves for em all the time they do this sometimes , sometimes they would even tear it up ive seen this with my own eyes

If he picked up a wounded/dying bird,he might have got pecked and gone a bit wary

another thing iv seen with them if they get a taste off the bird they dont like they will do this sometimes, go back to basics and do some retrieving work with him at home and he should be ok
