Think I got caught by a Garda for speeding. He was hiding behind the lamppost at the end of the UCD sliproad and I was coming under bridge. I had pulled into right lane already to turn right down nutley so the guy behind me shot up in front so hopefully he got him instead :D, but I was speeding :o Doing 70-72 and it's a 60 so my own fault. When would I hear if I have points?

Unless things have changed, you haven't been caught, you'd have been told then and there.

Am I right with this, if they're holding the radar gun (or whatever it is) they have to stop you right there. But, if it's on a tripod you'll get a letter?

The speedo on cars usually over reads actual speed by a few kph. And they will likely give a few kph leeway with speed guns, (gosafe vans for example allow 9kph over before catching), so overall, it is likely you will be ok

It was Garda on his own with a hand held gun camera and his motorbike parked on the side of the road. When I came up from the shops 10 minutes later he was gone so I was hoping it was one of guys who chases people to give them points. Does this mean I might not be caught?? Was absolutely speeding so if I get points I deserve them :(

Well my car speedo overreads by about 7kph or so, so when it says 70 on the clock, im actually doing about 63.

Thanks for the replies. I'm positive it was a Garda with the gun and obviously I wasn't pulled over so I feel a bit better now. I have no points so two wouldn't ruin me but it'd still be a bummer. Lesson learned! I'm usually very careful with speed but I didn't notice until I saw him and looked down. I live just beside there so I am well aware they are always in the same spot and usually always there on a Sunday, so will be more conscious in future!

Fantastic to see that the time machine has finally been invented.

That speed limit is set by the anti-car pen pushers out in Dun Laoghaire Co. Council. It's a four lane dual-carriageway where there are no schools and no shops, it should be at least 70 kph and not 60 kph which in old money is less than 40 mph.

The Garda overtime budget is like a birthday cake, everyone gets a slice so the Traffic Corps people get a few hours double-time on Sundays to operate turkey shoots on the Talllaght (N81) road and that one at UCD on the N11. Easy money.

The nearest schools are the Teresian College opposite RTE and Scoil Iosagain which is just south of the Radisson Hotel.

In both cases there is a footbridge adjacent to the school and pupils are expressly forbidden from crossing the dual carriageway on foot at road level. UCD students have the flyover.

    Or maybe Joey's in Fairview?

We're talking about the N11. There are speed ramps on Nutley Lane.

No need for the first comment.

The students still have to walk up to the N11 for the bus or sports in UCD. So it is still in the vicinity as regards frequent concentrated use.
Not saying I agree with the speed limit, or disagree, but if your talking about schools and students affecting the speed on the road, you need to take into account any school in the area that has students using the road on a regular basis. You frequently see students from Michael's getting on or off the bus on both sides of the traffic lights just after where the OP saw the guard.

Plenty of activities going on in schools outside of normal school days. OP just put a fiver a week away untill you hit €80, if in six months you haven't gotten a fine; spend it on a night out.

In which case they can either cross the flyover to go to UCD or if they need to catch a bus opposite RTE, they can cross at the junction of Nutley Lane where there are pedestrian-controlled lights on the city side of the junction.

I am well aware I shouldn't have been speeding, as I said if I got the points and fine I would have deserved them as I was well over the 60. I agree the speed limit there is very low, I am usually very speed conscious and was in no way going dangerously fast for the road and the conditions - if I was caught so be it, but like anyone would, I was hoping to get away with it ;) I know someone who got caught in last two weeks on the N11 in Wicklow, (one of 100km sections that is pretty similar to the 120km, not the one lane bit) and they were clocked at 109 so I thought maybe they were getting very strict with the leeway and I would be getting my letter in the post.

Same scenario with the other schools on the route. As I said, my post neither agrees or disagrees with the limit. It merely says that in order to have a proper discussion about it you must take into account all schools in the area

Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, that's in order of increasing distance from the planet. There's about 100 more but can't for the life of me remember their names. Ganymede is the largest planetary moon in the solar system.

    Not quite.

They can sometimes also have the radar gun mounted on a tripod. If it's just a radar gun on the tripod then they still have to pull you over.

The camera unit looks a bit different to the basic radar gun, so if it looks just like the "hairdryer" with some legs then it's probably not a camera unit.

As far as I know the non-van camera units are fairly rare in Ireland (less than 10 units)

When my speedo says I'm doing 60, I'm actually doing about 75! Thankfully I remember this :D

So it's ok to break the speed limit while reversing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

Its fairly common to have the gun mounted on a tripod if its a car based Traffic Corp unit. Motorcycle Gardai don't given the space constraints. However it must be on a tripod for a photo to be taken.

Your quite right that there are few camera / laser combo units in the country. I've only ever seen PR photos of them.

Its laser, not radar by the way ;)
