Hello going for a 3-day city break here with a friend. Could anyone recommend a fairly central hotel or an area to stay in that's fairly central and safe? Hoping to visit all the usual touristy stuff-Van Gogh Museum, Ann Franks house etc
    Many thanks in advance.

Have stayed in a few hotels there and The Convent was my favourite by far. Really nice hotel, short walk to everywhere, trams 1,2,5 right outside the door.

If you're going before April the Rijksmuseum is closed unfortunately

    https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/opening-and-renovation/opening

And the Van Gogh museum has moved until similar time re-opening

http://www.hoteldiann.com/ is a nice hotel in a fairly central location that I'v used before, the rooms with their view of the canal and the trams kept my kids amused when they were younger.
They don't have a lift though and the very steep stairs up to the lobby might be a challenge.

Go to the Troppenmuseum! I can't recommend it enough, it's a bit outside the city centre but not too far. The place is huge! It's got artefacts from every corner of the globe. Honestly, just go.

http://www.wittetulp.nl located in the middle of the RLD with an Irish pub underneath it. Lovely crepe place a few doors down, and never had any trouble in the area.

If you plan on going to the Anne-Frank museum, book online beforehand @ http://www.annefrank.org/en/Museum/Practical-information/Online-ticket-sales/ so you go can go in a special entrance to the left of the main entrance, and thus skipping a large queue. Don't go in stoned, though.

If you do plan on getting stoned, goto the one of the Dampkring coffe shops to the south of the RLD; better selection of weed, less stupid (drunk) tourists, and a very chilled setting.

Finally, if you do plan on getting stoned, make your plan before you get there, as once your there you'll drift aimlessly from one coffee shop to the next :P

    =-=

Everything usually closes up at around 2am. Would not recommend been out after this as there usually a higher percentage of weirdos about. If you are out then, don't make eye contact with strangers, and don't say you'll buy what they offering in the hopes they'll leave you alone, as they'll follow ye. This is just "common sense", but it's better to know.
