Strange that they never targeted teachers who are priests and don't follow creationism.

The church needs more priests like that to bring it (albeit kicking and screaming) into the 21st century.

"How can I put my name to such a document when it goes against everything I believe in," he said in an interview Wednesday.

Well then stop being a catholic!!!!!!!
Dont join an institution with God given () rules if you dont agree with them in the first place.

The church changes it's "rules" all the time, of course he should join and try to discuss what rules he thinks there should be. There are plenty of catholics that don't believe the Vatican is right, and over 33, 000 christian denominations.

So then they dont believe that the Pope is Christs main man on earth who is guided by God. A central tenent of catholicism.
These are GODS!!!! rules given to El papa. Dont try and change them.:D:D
    (Im not Christian BTW)

If he really had a pair he'd leave that rotten institution in the dust and practice his faith independent of them.

Well in fairness creationism is just crazy and unbelieveable.
The changing of a piece of wafer into the body and wine into the blood of a 2000 year dead God figure ony on a sub atomic invisable level is totally fine.

I'm not religious - but I really don't get this.

He's a priest. He's devoted his life to a particular religion. It seems awfully out of place for a mere mortal to challenge the divine wisdom of the church....a reflection of the will of God.

That'd be like me saying I'm a Catholic Priest - only I think that God isn't real and the Earth is the back of a giant sea turtle. At some point, I'm just a guy sharing his beliefs.

I'm not against people sharing their beliefs...but if he has a problem with Catholocism, it seems like he should start be not being a Catholic.

John Paul II was the one who said it. Pretty much said that if a catholic wants to believe in evolution that's ok, they just believe that at the point where the apes became human, that's the point where they all start getting souls. (Which makes we wonder why they can't use the same argument for a foetus. not wanting to start anything/derail, there are plenty of threads where people can bring that back at me). In many areas they're actually quite progressive.

But I've never really understood the whole women priest thing. I can't see any reasons why being a woman would make a worse priest. They'd actually look better in a dress.

Do foetuses have souls? Why cant they be baptised before birth?

Nope, he's a hypocrite who wants to be considered Catholic but
wants to interpret Catholic beliefs his own way.
He should either shut up or get out.
