is it the coil pack? it gives the spark to the plugs?

If your car is jerky and this part has got to do with the spark plugs, I'm thinking the part you're talking about is an ignition coil.

yes that could be it. its on 2 of the spark plugs

Sounds like an issue with either your ganglepin or perhaps the spodrod?

You should have an ignition coil on each of the 4 spark plugs

Could you give them a ring to get the name of the part, then contact some scrapyards/breakers?

We can't really advise you properly from that description because we don't actually know what part you're on about.

It would seem very odd that there's only 2 of them as cars normally have 1 ignition coil per spark plug and I'm guessing your 323 isn't a 2 cylinder :P

It's a flux capacitor. I think the mazda 323 takes the 1.21 gigawatt model.

If that engine has dohc, could it have 2 separate rocker covers? Could the gasket be gone?

if i wanted to go back to the future i would need one of those

it has to do with emissions

TBH, lots of things have to do with emissions, I'm not even sure your car has what I'm talking about, more trying to figure what it is from your description.

Can you either take a picture or find one on google images?

    It's probably ignition coils OP.

And according to the Blue Print Live catalogue that model has 2.

Ignition coils failing could damage Cat? Is that the link with emissions?

Its surely coil pack. Plenty cars have just 2 of them, each one running 2 cylinders.

All you are doing is ringing to check you've the right name of the part.
I've done that countless times be it car/pc/other device with something wrong.

He/she is the expert and should be well used to such calls. And far better placed to tell you what it is, having seen the car and the faulty part.

You could also ask your mechanic to source the part from you from a scrapyard

Think that car had twin coils, individual coils, while common now were once the exception (single coil pack, the usual)

    wrong

some cars have 2 coil packs...each coil pack powering 2 spark plugs

its called a wasted spark ignition system

it damages the cat because the car miss fires and the petrol gets chucked out of the cylinder down the exhaust into the cat.... The petrol crystallizes and casues the cat to break up
