Radiator making banging sound but not bleeding

My Mam is having an issue with a large (about 1.8m, single) radiator in her house. The bottom 6 inches are getting lukewarm but the rest of the rad is staying cold.

Bleeding the rad doesn't seem to work - no water comes out and there's no indication of air coming out. Tried bleeding it with the boiler on and off, rad open and closed, no joy.

During the middle of the night for the past couple of nights, the radiator has started making a very noisy banging or knocking sound, so loud it wakes her even with earplugs in. I'm struggling to figure out why that is, particularly given the system is not on at the time the noises come.

I'd really appreciate any pointers or things to try to sort it out for her. It seems it may be too small a job to call someone in for (D24) but I guess if my limited knowledge or tips on here can't sort it, we'll need to ask someone if they'll have a look.

More info needed is it oil or gas is it a open vented or sealed system sounds like there's no water either low water in system or the rads bleed hole is blocked

I have a problem with a rad - does not heat at all. I have bled it until water oozes out, but still no heat. Rest of rads in house working. OFCH.

Not being smart - but is it actually turned on? Twist the valve where the pipe comes into the rad in the direction of the red arrow.

Thanks Robbie. It's an oil boiler and it's an open vented system. Even taking the bleeding nut out completely didn't lead to any air or water coming out and there were no noticeable blockages from sticking a paper clip in, though it's hard to tell as it's not easy to see.

Go and check the small water tank I the attic the ball valve might be jammed and tank ran out of water if so just tip the ball valve down and let the tank fill.if tanks ok check hot press and make sure valves
Are openif your not sure take a pic and post
