Only caught this news this morning.

Any fan of the wire will be very familiar with the character 'proposition Joe'.

According to his sister he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thus from heart failure .Only 52 btw.

His character was one of my favourite's from the excellent show, may he R.I.P
The actor, who played drug kingpin Proposition Joe in the HBO series, was found in his apartment on Thursday (January 17).

His sister Clarice told the Baltimore Sun that Chew died in his sleep of apparent heart failure at his Baltimore home.

Chew appeared in all five seasons of David Simon's acclaimed drama series, and also had parts in Simon's other HBO shows Homicide: Life on the Street and The Corner.

Jamie Hector, who played Marlo Stanfield on The Wire, remembered his former co-star on Twitter, writing: "I didn't want to believe this #RIP Robert F Chew, Prop Joe will always be remembered Robert Chew will always be loved and missed!"

Michael K Williams, who played Omar on The Wire, also tweeted about Chew's passing: "R.I.P. to the talented Mr Robert Chew #propjoe."

That's weird. I've been rewatching the Wire recently and just watched the last episode he appeared in, and was probably on Thursday.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’:
In terms of what Mr. Chew brought to Proposition Joe, Simon said: "The Wire cast was an embarrassment of riches and it was easy, I think, for outsiders to overlook some of those who were so essential as supporting players. Robert's depiction of Proposition Joe was so fixed and complete -- from the very earliest scenes -- that the writers took for granted that anything we sent him would be finely executed.”

Pointing to a scene that indicates the range of talents Chew brought to the production, Simon said, "Late in the run, almost as a tip of the hat to the work that Robert had done for us, I wrote up a scene in which Proposition Joe -- in order to determine whether someone was a police officer trying to infiltrate his drug crew -- gets on a pay phone and in rapid succession imitates four different characters in four different voices. If you remember that scene and Robert's performance, you know everything you'd need to know about how good an actor this man was.”

"And apart from that, he was a fine and generous man," Simon concluded.
