Fedex Customs Issues

Looking for abit of advice on how best to proceed with an issue with Fedex.

Basically I got a package containing a piece of jewelry from Fedex in December (Item cost $189) and a week later got an tax/import bill for 59e.

Regardless the item I was sent was wrong so I proceeded to return it. I then rang Fedex informing them the item had been returned and what details did they want (i.e Shipping receipt) to confirm the item had been returned. To which the woman informed me she could not help, that I was still liable to pay Fedex and I then had to attempt to re-coup the charges from the customs authority. I said that is ridiculous why should I pay for something I don't have that I sent back. To which she said she could help me no more.

Just wondering if anyone had an experience like this? and what did they do next do I pay Fedex and ATTEMPT to get a refund from Customs?

Any Advice would be much appreciated.

You are liable for the charges. Fedex are a clearing agent, and they pay the Revenue, and then get the money back from you. You did import the item, so you are liable for the duty.

Once you have your paperwork in order that the item was sent back, the Revenue will refund you.

Same here. Even if you get a refund it will not be for the full amount since a fair whack of it is Fedex's fee.
I contacted them constantly and ended up giving up and just ignored it. No hassle since.
In future I'm not putting a real name on any packages from USA/China.

I get what your saying but ho can some company pay a bill on my behalf if i haven't approved that they pay it? I mean if the item arrives at my door and they say you have to pay almost 40% of the items worth to receive it , then i would tell them take it back. But they didn't and it wasn't my signature that signed for receipt of collection so how is it they can bill me?

Either way they should be some facility where especially if the item is returned fedex sort it out with customs not me. I mean I DID NOT ask them to pay the duties, UPS and other companies will not deliver an item unless taxes have been payed why is Fedex pay the taxes then charge an inordinate handling fee and expect you to cough up?

I pay what I consent to paying not what a company says they have payed for me and then alleges I owe.

Their argument to me was that I would have agreed to accept to pay customs and related changes when I purchased the item.
In fact I was buying to sell on at a fixed price and had arranged with the seller that I was paying no more. They said that they can't deal with the seller.
If I had known there would be extra charges I would have refused to accept delivery.
They weren't sure of the rules themselves but someone was still sending me invoices.

When you buy an item, normally there is a box or T&C clause that says that you are liable for all taxes and duties. This is on the seller site. This is then the authorisation given to Fedex to ship the item to you.

Who signed for it, etc, have nothing to do with it. You imported an item, so you are liable for the duty.

While I understand your frustration, you should be discussing this with the seller of the item or else with the Revenue.

I've had items from Fedex, where they required payment before delivery. I guess it depends on the day, the driver, the delivery, etc. Same with UPS, DHL, An Post, and all other courier services.

you pay what the government decided you should pay ...for importing the item (which you did), Fedex are only a collection agent for the government - money goes to revenue.

if you dont want to be charged import duty by Fedex ...dont use fedex - but dont be surprised if An Post or a different carrier sends you a bill for import duty if you import something from outside the EU.

Like has been said before...pay it and claim it back - once you have proof you posted back and the seller received the item you will get refunded the import duty. (its all a paper trail ...revenue need to collect the money so they can say their intake from import tax is higher than expected)

You are liable for the import duties. Keep all paperwork - a credit card statement is ideal to prove you bought it and then contact Revenue to claim back the payment. If you are not happy with the amount don't hesitate to query them. I claimed back a gross overpayment - not a word of apology of course.I always use USPS from the 'States as most items will slip through.

Actually about half is Fedex's fee for paying the bill for you!
