I'm in fifth year and want to become a psychiatrist. However, I do not study two science subjects. Could I study psychology and then enter medicine? :)

    Hi,
To be a Psychiatrist you would need to study medicine then Do a special kind of course in Psychology. To do medicine you need 2 science subjects. For Psychology you don't need any science subjects.

Edit: Actually , I think there is a way for you to become a Psychiatrist. I remember reading a magazine and one article was about a woman who became a doctor and she did not have GCSE or A level Science subjects. I don't remember the name of the college where she studied medicine whether it was in England, Wales or elsewhere. The course probably decided to allow you to study medicine if you had a degree in something else. The magazine was one of my mothers and it was either Bella or Womans Way that had that article. Anyway you could try Googling Medicine degree without science subjects or look up courses on the UCAS website and you might find something.

Best of luck in your future career.

The people over in Sci>Health Sciences, being medical doctors, can probably give you more useful advice. I believe there is something called HPAT (?) which allows for non-traditional entry to medicine - but they'll know all about it.

Have a chat with an admissions office from a uni, but afaik the following pathway is possible -

Get yourself a good Leaving Cert and study science afterwards at a uni which also has medicine. After a year (possibly two) do your HPAT and reapply to do medicine - with your Leaving, science experience and HPAT.

the only downside is that you would have to pay for the first two years of med school as the HEA will only pay for you to go forward in education.

You would want to be fairly sure about your future though to work towards all that
Again, make sure to check it out officially
    Good luck!

This thread might help somewhat http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=81760579

And this one will give you the answer! http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=73929294

EDIT: Also I believe the mod Sam34 would be the best authority to direct questions to - as he/she is a psychiatrist

    Good luck! :)

Have a look at NUIG's 6 year medical programme!

How about taking on an extra subject in your own time?

This was what I did - I was afraid I would fail art, so took biology to bump up my points.

I started studying it 4 months before the leaving cert,
never told my teachers or got grinds,
just bought the book, studied like mad, and ticked the box when filling out what exams you will be taking.

I got an A in higher level.

If you put in the time now for your extra science subject,
it would be well worth it.
    Best of luck

    :D
