Recovery truck license

    hi i am just wondering what license i need for a recovery truck that weighs about 3-5 tonne. i currently have a full irish car license

    C1 covers you up to 7.5Ton.

    Check the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) of the recovery truck. If it's less than 3.5Ton (3,500kg) you can drive it on a car licence, but it's practically useless as a recovery truck.

    If it's over 3.5Ton then you need a C1 or C licence.

    its act 6 ton so looks like i'll def need a c licence....whats the price of the theory for that do you know? is it possible to drive them with a provisional. have drove plenty of smaller ones so i am capable.

    No idea of costs, but there is a thread somewhere with that info.

    You'll only be able to drive one on a learners permit, if you have a qualified driver with you.

    I've only driven one vehicle over 3.5Ton (Atego van) and that was a massive difference to driving a 3.5Ton van even though it's not much bigger.

    you need to go and get your C class full licence plus you also need to do the current CPC which im pretty sure is part of the new licence.. your insurance if you can get it will probably not allow you pick up cars etc and if it did would cost a fortune.. perhaps as an idea you could buy the truck and hire someone part time until you get suitably qualified.. Anything to do with commercial transport has gotten extremely strict in the last cpl of years and the fines impossed by VOSA are extremely high and definately not worth taking a chance ...youd loose more than you would gain.. hope this helps...

    as for insurance its trade and the boss has full c so no prob once i get the provisional until i'm ready for the full
