Can bikes be traded in against a new bike like you would at a car dealer?

Can bikes be traded in against a new bike like you would at a car dealer? Just wondering is it possible?

There must be thousands of second hand bikes out there. Do they all move through private sales?

Some shops will take them but you will probably get less than what you'd get in a private sale. The shop has to clean them up and then make a profit on it.

Yes they can. I got my new bike from the shop as a result of a trade in.

Just like with cars, "it depends"

The question is probably two fold.

If I got a decent price for a trade in (and I know I could get better going private) I'd be very happy to speak to my LBS.

Also I dont mind the idea of buying second hand but would like the security of buying off a shop.

Generally, with the amount of stolen bikes around, most shops I have come across will only accept a trade in if they originally sold the bike and are aware of it's full history.

Shops will take trade-ins as has been said but they'll only take something that'll sell, so it has to be in decent condition and usually flashier bikes are prefered (although that kind of depends on the shop). Also, have other posters they'll want to be sure it isn't stolen and they'll need to make a profit on it so they won't usually offer you a great price for it.

Second hand bikes in shops can represent very good value though. I got my race bike second hand for a decent discount compared to buying new but I still had some of the security of buying new since I was dealing with a reputable shop rather than some randomer on donedeal.

but they'll only take something that'll sell

^This. In my experience, it's only decent quality racing machines that shops will take.

The right second hand bikes sell like hot cakes these days so plenty of shops deal in used bikes. At the same time it also means you should be able to sell your bike privately yourself without too much effort.

    So.

    Whatcha buying?

    And whatcha selling? ! :)

No time like the present :)

I couldn't find a shop that would do a "trade in" Ala the motor industry, but some will spruce it up and sell it on, after deducting the price of the spruce up. I managed to sell mine in a free ads paper (Echo pink pages) for way below it's value but it was no good to me parked in the shed going rusty and at least i got something for it.

    I have a BH Zaphire 6.7

Undecided about what to go for. I'm looking for the best bang for my buck with a budget of around €1000-€1500
