    Hi everyone.

Basically, I've applied this week to a company called Drury Lane Pharmacy Ltd. The job description basically is to receive a cheque, put it into my bank and wait further instructions. I've been feeling icky the past few days because the guy that called me wasn't really able to communicate in English properly(please don't take any racial offences but he sounded Chinese).

The few reasons why I'm doubting:

-I've asked the guy two times of what to do with the money. I didn't get a reply. He only told me that he will give me a set of instructions after I get the money into my bank when I called him about it.

-Wouldn't you have an interview/background check/chat with somebody who you would trust money with?

-(He doesn't know this) A friend of mine applied for the same job and the replies that I get are the same replies that he gets. He didn't get an e-mail saying that he was accepted but he got an e-mail(same as mine) stating instructions about what to do with the cheque.

Please do help me out as I am not sure what to do anymore.

It's a scam. Report it to the Gardai and do not lodge the cheque.

Crap. The guy knows my address and everything on my CV. Would I not be in deep trouble?

You're only been a fool in thinking it was a real job so far; you're not in trouble until you cashed the first stolen/fake cheque.

I actually didn't think that it was a real job. I had doubts even from the start but I was just thinking that; what the hell can they do if they're the ones sending money and not me. But anyway I'm definitely not pursuing this. What can I do to ensure my safety? I will definitely report to the Gardai but what next? Can this 'company' come for me? They do know my address.

They will probably send you a large foreign cheque. You then wire them the majority of the money by western union or similar.

Your cheque then gets bounced (it takes longer for foreign cheques to bounce) and you are out of pocket.

A new twist on an old scam.

Its a pity he has your details, but you are not in trouble with the law. Its just a security issue on your part, in case he uses your information nefariously. Doubt they will 'come after you'. This is a distance scam, they wont get their hands dirty, just move on to another mark.

Alright. That kind of makes sense. I'm not even going to go through the details.

Again, what can I do to ensure my safety and what can I do to prevent him using my information nefariously as you say?

Thanks you all for your help by the way.

They're not registered with the CRO

OP, how did you come into contact with them in the first place?

    A job hiring website.

Am I allowed to post up their link on the website?

EDIT: For the safety of other people trying to apply, too. I just don't know if I'm allowed or not. Once someone says I can do so, I will.

Thank you so much. I'll go straight to the Gardai when I receive the cheque. Thanks again.

Your info could be used for identity fraud. Change anything you can like phone numbers, advise the gardai and your bank. Im not sure what else you can do, but if it were me, I wouldn't be doing a heck of a lot (not even the above), as I would bank on the probability that once they lose you as a main target in the scam, youre not of much use to them.

    Thank you so much.

Another reason why I went this far was because I didn't really have much to lose anyway(except identity), I mean, I have basically 0 on my account anyway.

    Again thank you.

Oh by the way, the 'company' is not here. It's in new zealand(according to him).

I'd call indeed as well and tell them to take it down immediately.

I'd call the guards, that is worded so generally that they already have a thousand cvs.

Even if you dont bite, someone will. Let the guards deal with it and you'll save someone a whole world of trouble.

I'll go to a Gardai station later this afternoon and let them know every detail. Thanks guys.

Make sure and note the guards name, just in case you need it going forward

What do you mean exactly by saying 'going forward'?

I will get his/her name. Thanks again.

This thread is not a joke. Please do refrain from posting if you're not going to contribute. Sorry about the attitude but the situation is very fragile in my point of view and here you are doing this.

Thank you for not posting on this thread in the future.

In case someone commits some sort of fraud using your details (doubt that'll happen, youre one of many marks that theyve collected from cvs)

But if it does, it'll be easier to sort if you've got evidence of reporting it to gardai;)

    No backseat moderation please.

Seriously though, it's obviously some sort of scam.

Yeah, I've had that feeling from the start. But being new to applying for jobs(I am quite young and I don't have much experience), I was attracted by it so I stuck with it until now.

If you have any doubts there is a reason so best not to go ahead with it. Avoid it at all costs of the company doesn't exist or doesn't seem genuine.

The job description itself sounds dodgy!

Unless you heard of the company before or that its well known or know someone works there would you know its a genuine job/company!

People are blanket applying for work over the internet. So a company like this has no problem fishing for info.

OP, i find the most effective way to look for work is in person, looking your best, with a good cv. Always call ahead and find out hr / managers name. Drop the cv to that person. Follow up to your contact regurlarly, and try and build a rapport with them.

Its easier to be called to interview if they 'know' you and easier to throw random faceless cvs in the bin.

If youve got a cv gap or lack of experience, consider volunteering.ie.
