agreed, but lakill do you think a small farming business using an accountant from far away (boy I sound old) not red flag with the lads?

I am with IFAC in cork for the service they give I would be better off with an accountant on the moon  I wanted to make an appointment with my accountant at the end of the tax year and was told he was very busy this time of year

I agree with you on this. However, the majority of people particularly farmers like to meet face to face and discuss the figures when they are complete. Also there are some discussions that just need to be had face to face.

Best thing to do is ask someone you trust for a recomendation. Not every accountant would know all the relevant parts to farm accounts such as stock releif etc.

the chat ;) is still carried out. Not hard to run to cork to meet a lad is what i say. I always try to meet a client once a year. Some lovely parts in this country

I often go out to the client. Helps with having a look around there place and also its surprising the advice you can give.

No excuse for an accountant to say " he is busy, very very busy" after all in most places he will be charging you €45 plus an hour to see him/her.

What you need is a good accountant he doesn't need to know about farming you do!!!!!!

Not at all. How many business and lads to you know have accountants all over the country? because they years ago played gaa with him , dated his sister etc. Ireland is a few hundred miles north to south and east to west.

If your based in Cork and your accountant is in Westmeath, the accountant still deals with your tax office in Cork. And its almost all online.

It helps if the accountant knows the business, i even trained in a practice specialising in farmers and sole traders.

Sorry probably was. I guess if the accountant knows the business of farming and how hard it is to make a profit from a business the farmer puts 7days a week into they are in a better place to advice. thats all.

Says me, accounts to 5pm today, then had to feed weanlings, house and inject the few sheep and back now to the pc for an hour :D

Is there a danger that the advice may be scewed by a bad experience rather than accountancy advice?

He needs to know about farm accounting as opposed to farming. I use FDC but I know a few lads that go to IFAC and find them very good as well. Both are fimilar with farm accounting and are fairly compeditive price wise. They also have a good office network nationwide and will give you a fair idea what your accounts will cost if you ask for a quote.

I'm with IFAC in Tralee. The fee is a little pricey but the service is spot on.I guess with IFAC or FDC, it depends on who's in your local office
