Need a bit of advice here please guys, I have been unemployed now for around 2 and a half years.I had planned on joining the gardai but reading the posts on here and reading through the news it doesnt look like it's gonna happen. I'm only 20 atm but the thing is I just don't seem to have intrest in any other job. I am on job seekers allowance and because of my age I only recieve 100 euro a week, After rent and stuff i'm left with like 30 for myself but i'm just happy as I am even though I never have money.

My life atm is staying up most of the night and usually getting out of bed at about 3pm in the day. I usually go to a friends house for a few hours at night and that is my only social interaction that I actually have.

I see friends, family and everyone around me moving on, going to college ect.. I just don't seem to have the motivation that everyone else has.

Is it really bad to be happy with my life as is?

Yep. You need to earn money. You might be happy now but you'll eventually feel the pressure of wanting to do something with your life. It is your life and, even though times are hard, you have your health which enables you to get out and do things.

I remember in a job I had before, a person who worked there doing the same job as me had got that job by asking my boss for a job that he would do for free. Think about that. You have many options if you are prepared to do that. Once you get into somewhere like that, if you enjoy it, prove yourself and get them to give you a paying job. Or, just do it to have more interactions with people. It's vital that you do something as the longer it goes on as it is, the harder you will find it to work in a professional environment.

I know the situation with the guards is impossible ATM (don't start me on that recruitment ban) but would you consider going abroad? Have heard about people becoming police officers in oz etc. if its really what you want to do would you think about it?

You need a job to save first though.

Tbh you're not happy as you are or else you wouldn't be posting here. Hate to break it to you but you are going to have to get work somewhere even if its not the guards.

You must qualify for a FAS course of some kind, do it. You need a reason to get up in the morning and cut out the late nights.

Look at it this way. If the guards started to recruit tomorrow do you think they would go for someone who's been on the dole for two plus years or someone who didn't let life pass him by and did something constructive with his time?

Good luck op. Only you can change your life.

If you want to get on in this life, career wise, you need to plan. Nothing is going to land in your lap and you won't find what you want to do sitting at home.

I appreciate that you had a dream, but you can't give up on it, they may start recruiting again in a few years, you might only be 24, you are sooo young now, but don't waste your time.

Join the red cross as a volunteer, you will get to see and experience some of the things you might if you were a Guard (You will have to complete a first aid course).

Why don't you talk to your local Guard and ask him for advise as to how to best prepare for a future recruitment drive which would guarantee you a place in Portlaoise or even working abroad in law enforcement.

Trust me, you won't get anywhere sitting around at home doing nothing. It is OK for a few months after school to take a break, but you got to get off you butt sometime.

Volunteering will look really good on your application for the guards or on your C.V.

Lying in bed until 3pm at 20 years of age is an absolute disgrace and is also your motivational problem.

In the Winter it means you only see about 1 hour of daylight, not healthy! Most people have a day's work done at that late stage in the day.

Unemployed is not an excuse, you need to set out a healthier daily routine. Be out of the scratcher early, get a breakfast into you, some morning exercise (walk, run whatever) and a shower. This will set you up for the day. I can't emphasize the exercise thing enough for any age.

Get your daily routine going and then start working on a longer term plan for the future. What do you want to do? what do you want to experience from life? Where do you want to be in 10 years? All these things don't happen overnight, they take years, so don't be expecting miracles, you have to get out and take life by the b*lls!

Some here say 20 is 'so young', actually sorry its not in my book, you're an adult and already quarter of the way through your life, most adults your age are already training or studying for future careers. You already see it happening!

C'mon, get on it, this is your life!
