    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice about buying my first car. I have a budget of 4,500 - 5000. I'd like a small reliable car. I've been looking at Volkswagen Polo, Opel Corsa, Ford Fiestas and Toyota Yaris.

Can anyone recommend any of the above? I really don't know much about cars so any advice is welcome.

    Thanking You.

A Yaris is the pick of the bunch. It's the most reliable small car on your list and is very cheap to run and maintain. Another car id have on that list is a diahatsu sirion. These are essentially the same car as the second generation yaris as Toyota own Diahatsu so reliabilty is top notch in them.

Yaris and corsa would be my choice.

Yaris. Last of the old shape. Strata model is high spec for a yaris and common enough

My sister has a 2008 Ford Fiesta for nearly 3 years and not a moment's trouble with it. They are relatively cheap compared to a similar Yaris. On your budget you should be able to get a 2006 or 2007 1.25 litre Steel model.

    Something like this:

I'd avoid the Polo, the others will be fine, Yaris would be the best of the bunch.

The corsa would be the one id avoid, all others are better cars (but that depends on the individual car, small cars regurlarly get little or no maintenance)

Check it well, and link up any car before buying it and people here can give you more advice (tear it apart;))

If youre not comfortable around cars bring a friend with knowledge or pay a mechanic.

Out of that list myself I'd probably take the Fiesta - cheap to maintain as they're so common, 1.25L engine so cheaper insurance/tax and the newer models as linked to above look well - like a mini-Focus really

Avoid a corsa at all costs. They are a terrible car.

+1 on this. Imo the older model is a better finished car than the newer model and it has that nicer 4 cylinder engine as opposed the the 3 cylinder unit in the new model.

Can you specify what, in your opinion, is the problem with them?

Steering rack failures on them is not uncommon and expensive to put right. I know of one person that had one and the multi function control module went in it leaving them stranded. There are other little niggley things that go wrong with them aswell and they are rough enough to drive imo.
