Living outside EU and travelling in EU - health coverage

    I live in the US and will be travelling around Europe for a few months in the summer.

    I am not entitled to the Euro Health Insurance Card as I do not reside in an EU county.

    Can't find info on whether I, as an Irish citizen, and by extension of marriage, my non-EU wife, are entitled to some sort of coverage when we travel.

    Anyone with knowledge of this? Thanks in advance.

    Depending on which country you visit, you may or may not be expected to pay money for basic medical services. Most services in the UK would be covered by the National Health Service (NHS) but other countries are different, I recall a recent poster saying that when being treated for a minor injury while on holidays in Spain, the hospital doctor treating him asked for cash on the spot!

    As you say, you are not entitled to the EHIC card as you must be 'ordinarily resident' in Ireland to get an Irish one.

    Private medical insurance would be highly recommended, especially to cover repatriation should this be necessary.
