InterRailing East Europe

Hey guys, I'm sure you have had a lot of threads like this but if you could help in anyway that would be great.

Basically we are planning on flying into Amsterdam and working our way down towards Lake Bled/Croatia.

Has anyone ever gone from Lake Bled to Croatia specifically down towards Dubrovnik? As that would be were we would fly home from. From what I can see its not feasible as there are no direct trains to Dubrovnik? Would I be right in saying we would need to stay in Zagreb/Split along the way.

Another possibility is going from Lake Bled to Venice. My query here would that be possible on a standard interrail ticket? Are there restriction say like zones that you can only travel within?

I wouldn't mind having a few relaxing days on a beach at the end. Is there anywhere south east that would be easily accessible with nice beaches? What is Lake Bled like?

Sorry for all the questions but I have googled it and I keep getting conflicting answers so I'm hoping someone here has been there done that!

Lake Bled and the Croation coast is a nice tour. You will probably have an easier itinerary if you pass by Zagreb or Split, but you don't have to go by both.

There's no train to Lake Bled (or rather, there wasn't 4 years ago), you get there by bus, if you want to get there from Venice it's better to pass by Ljubljana - which is worth visiting anyway. Personally, I would only get an interrail ticket to get you as far as Ljubljana, or maybe even only as far as italy. After that, it's cheaper to just buy the tickets as you go.

There are loads of beach near Dubrovnik. The best bet is to get an island ferry for the day, and take a beach on an island, they're less crowded.

I went lake Bled to Dubrovnik a few years ago. I got a train from Bled to Zagreb, stayed there overnight then flew to Split and went to Hvar from there, then flew Split to Dubrovnik. You can fly direct from Zagreb to Dubrovnik and the flights were really cheap with Croatia airlines so you should def look into it!!

Lake Bled is great, loads to do...we rented boats, went horseriding, white water rafting and on a day tour all around the area and saw lake Bohinj etc aswell....beautiful country and loads to do! Spent four days in the Bled area and loved it!!!!!

Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering are the overnight trains included in the inter rail ticket or do you have to pay extra for them? If so how much are they? I'm specifically looking at Prague to Budapest.

If you have a look at the following site

    http://www.raildude.com/

It will answer all your questions about sleepers and supplements.

Usually overnights require a cheap or free reservation if you're willing to sleep-in-the-seat. Cabins are extra.

Once you get east of Germany/Austria, it's really not worth having an interrail card, especially for the overnight trains. Just buy the tickets when you need them
