Used Wheels

Early spring cleaning clear out continues.

What do ye guys do with used wheels? I have a pair of stock bontrager wheels lying around after replacing them a few months ago after over 3 years use. I don't think they're worth the cost of replacing rims and rebuilding. Bike mechanic didn't even want them for free. Rims are worn (normal 3 year use).

I suppose what I'm asking is could the rear wheel still be used safely as a dedicated turbo trainer wheel? Or is there any other use for both wheels.

I don't want to advertise them for sale if they're not safe for normal use, but if someone would get some use out of them, I'd certainly let them have them.

    Any thoughts?

When you say "recycle" do you mean put them back on the bike :D

I'll get my coat. I'm in funny form waiting for this late late show later on

Do kids not build go-karts any more? Who needs and xbox and a slow death due to obesity related diseases when you've a better than 50% chance of a spectacular exit from this world hurtling down Killiney hill in a death trap with no brakes, steered by a piece of string, that's falling apart as you accelerate?

Turn them into hula hoops, or a tasteful sculpture. Or you could use them to practice wheel building (take them apart, see if you can put them together again).

I'd say the rear would be fine for turbo use though unless the braking surface is very worn to the point of being concave. I don't have any personal experience of turboing but I can't imagine there's much hard braking so the rim isn't going to experience too much more wear in that role and even if it does fail you won't be going fast.

Alternatively, give them to me, I can always find a home for free bike stuff (or rothat might take them if you're in Dublin).

    Fair play to you Tonyandthewhale.

I wasn't thinking along your lines originally. I was more thinking would someone get some use out of the hubs, spokes etc for spares, but your post actually got me thinking. Something like this would certainly be different!

Think I'll hang onto the front wheel for something like the above, and for your input you've first dibs to the rear wheel if you want it. Failing that anyone else is welcome the the rear wheel for turbo or other use (with the caveat that I don't think it's safe for normal road use) or alternatively I'll give it to Rothar.

If Tonyandthewhale doesn't want that rear wheel, I'll take it off your hands.

Thanks, I'd be happy to take the rear wheel off your hands but assuming you're in Dublin I wouldn't be able to pick it up until the start of Feb so if you want to be rid of the clutter before then I don't mind at all if you want to give it to Wotdef or whoever.

All yours Tony. I'll send you a pm. Ya, based in Dublin
