VW Jetta 2.0 TDI CR Cambelt Change

Thinking of buying a VW Jetta 2.0 TDI CR 140 with 75,000 miles on it from the UK. I think I read somewhere that the interval for a cambelt change on these is 80,000 miles.

Should I push to seller to replace this before selling or to deduct the cost of a cambelt change from the selling price?

What's the approximate cost of a replacement cambelt on these? I assume similar to the cost on a TDI PD? Would it be cheaper to get it replaced up North?
Anything else that should be replaced on these at the same time as replacing the cambelt?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the cambelt is effectively the same thing as a timing belt in these, no? TKs.

Check the oil pump is OK, some of these engines develop oil pump problems Hex drive in the gear wears and the engine loses oil pressure.

Thanks. Do you have any idea of how much a cambelt replacement on these should cost?

The intervals vary depending on year and engine code. The only way to be 100% sure about the interval is to check via the chassis number.

For the timing belt kit and water pump job on the CR 2.0TDI you are looking at a price in the region of €425.

Also, I don't think the CR engine in the Jetta has a balance shaft so you shouldn't have any oil pump drive to worry about. It was certainly the case for the older PD 2.0 engine that only the Passat and A4/A6 had a balance shaft, the Golf based cars didn't.

The CR engines are 110000 miles afaik. Thats what it says in the 2008 UK passat Cr version of the 2l tdi service manual.

Having picked up a 2nd hand scirocco (`09) CR TDI , it appears VW have changed their minds again on the intervals for timing belt change. Appears to be 4 years or 120K, whatever comes first. Cost in my local VW dealer is 459 euro for Jan, 499 euro after this. Includes water pump, belts & tensioners etc.

Lots of dealers and other garages will quote a shorter belt interval when it suits them, i.e. if they think it will get them more work ;)

Thanks Peehadc, side question; how do you find/like your CR TDI engine as regards performance, responsiveness, noise, torque, economy etc? Is it a 140 or 170bhp version?

Myself I'm looking or a Jetta 2.0 TDI CR 140 Sport but they don't exist in Ireland pretty much and are also rare (and overpriced at almost 10k GBP + VRT + expenses) in the UK (SE's mostly which I don't really want). At the moment it's looking like I might have to go for an 08+ Mondeo Titanium in terms of value, road tax, space, economy etc. Shame the Jetta wasn't a more popular seller....perfect size-wise for many people.

Having come from 2 diesel BMW's ('03 320d and '08 520d-which we still have) I have to admit that that the 140 BHP scirocco is a blast. At almost 200kg lighter than the 3 series there is considerably more pick up between 3rd and 5th in the vw. Although 1st gear is terribly short.
As its 90% M50 driving for me ,slipping into 6th will deliver 62 mpg- ish, and about 950km on a 55lt tank which is good enough for me. If its frugal you want get the blue motion ( bit boring).
Cabin/engine noise isn't an issue as the sports exhaust seems tuned to deliver a bassy note when changing down thru gears, which is unusual considering its an oil burner. But push it and there's no doubt it's diesel...

My brother got his '09 tdci Mondeo chipped. Pulls well through all the gears with no ill effects to date on turbo/drive shaft. Don't think I'd be happy tho engine aside if in an accident.
