Was big in the sixties and seventies I believe, don't what it involved or what the process was, maybe it was an excuse for taking drugs and staring at your hand.Has anybody gone on the journey of finding themselves and if so how did it work and what did you find?also what is the modern version of finding yourself?

I think "Finding Yourself" could be defined in this modern time as what a reality TV contestant claims to have achieved when trying to justify their participation in the absence of any real achievement.

I have run, I have crawled, I have scaled these city walls... But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

Go somewhere away from Ireland alone for a month.

I think first you need to truly lose yourself.
This is where the booze/drugs come in.
Hammer it really hard for a few years and then change your ways.
Then you'll feel like you have found yourself.
Of course no guarantees you'll be able to stop!

That phrase to me always meant back-backing around some god forsaken part of the far east for a few months.

I've been as far as Fairyhouse but I've never been to Meath...maybe that's where I'll find myself

I wish people would just say they're going backpacking instead of acting like a prude looking for a life changing revelation.

Riding on an elephant in India, dipping your feet in the Ganges river or shaking hands with an orangutan in Borneo means absolutely sweet fcuk all. Get over yourselves.

I'd say it's about discerning the difference between the 'true self' and the 'false self'.

In modern society, I'd suggest it most often takes place in a psychotherapist/analyst's office.

You have to go north, west, south, then west again.

Is that the difference between what you think you are and the way other people see you?

It's about letting your inner child see the absurdity's and irony's in life and learning to laugh and let go of them ,whatever it is that might have seemed important really isn't ...regardless of weather you dip your toes in the Liffey or the Ganges .

    That's today's lesson over Padawan .;)

An infant is expected to behave in a certain way to maintain the affection of it's parents, so a false self starts to develop.

For example, a child with a natural tendency to explore is berated for pulling books off a shelf. In order to keep the parents onside, the child represses it's natural instinct.

Or a person subsumes the values of society and behaves accordingly, again denying their natural tendencies.

Or somebody else thrives on the glory of constant achievement to stave off the underlying feelings of depression.

The majority of people don't even realise there's a difference at all. Kinda like the Matrix.

"Do you know what I hate, do you know what I really, really fúckin' hate - fúck Osama Bin Ladin, fúck George Bush, fúck Jack Welch - who I really, really, fúckin' hate are these hoors who go around the fúckin' world again and again and again to fúckin' "find themselves". Get a fúckin' job you shower of fúcktard shít-for-brains losers!"

    - A Mayoman, who left Ireland at 17 years of age, telling me on my summer working in New York how he really felt about, and I quote, "college-educated fúckers"!

Some conversations, if one could call it that, are memorable.

Means a bit when the orangutan rips your arm off

Ah it's grand, there's just too many people there that I might confuse someone else for myself.

Even if you don't find yourself, the view along the way is spectacular.

    Recommend. :D

Hell yeah , it didn't do Jim Morrison , Brian Jones , Jimi Hendrix , Janis Joplin and John Lennon any harm ....well maybe except Lennon ...he went a bit weird there at the end

Being conscious of being alive at every waking moment, a constant awareness. You don't need to go anywhere in the world to find and be yourself, you're already right here waiting to be found, just reach out and drink it in.

    Wipes away tear.

Double drops another few delicious Xanax.

I would never have put the VU and LSD together, tbh.

4 days of driving alone across a huge country with barely any interaction with other humans can do wonders to help you figure stuff out.
