I have a dell desktop and the two usb ports at the front of the machine are not working. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Are they the only ones not working?
Have you tried attaching multiple devices to the ports?

Can you check the device manager, see if there is any yellow marking beside any of the usb ports. Could be a driver issue. Also, you could check the bios settings, see if usb ports have been turned off

Edit: Sorry, maybe you might not be tech savvy about checking device manager/ bios. If you need help doing that we can help

first thing that springs to mind is the front panel connection is loose. check the motherboard, there should be a cable leading from the Mobo to the front panel, it wont look like a USB connection but should be clearly labeled as such on the PCB.

If its not that you might have usb version 3.0 and need to download a driver from the Dell website.

    Hi,

Thanks for all your replies but unfortunately the problems are still persisting. My desktop model is a prebuilt Dell Inc. Vostro 230, if that helps, and the OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit.

    Thanks.
