    Hi All,

Does anyone know whether Imokilly Regato cheese is vegetarian? There is no clue on the packaging (that I can see) and I have had no success emailing the company.

    Er... what?
The article you linked to doesn't mention if the rennet used is vegetarian or not?

The starter culture, the rennet and the curd handling develop the flavour, body and texture of this specific cheese

I'd say since they go on about tradition a lot, it will be regular old rennet.

I think you might be a little confused.

It is based on some of the traditional coagulating materials for pre-medieval Irish cheeses

    so I would guess no

but you cuold always email them and ask sales@imokillycheesecompany.com

Thank you all for your responses. At a guess I would agree that it is probably made with traditional rennet.
Thanks Little Ted for that address. I tried it and another address with no success - the messages bounce back to me.
Anyone have any other ideas on how to find out?

It's vegetarian - Imokilly Regato PDO / Medium Fat hard cheese (Grated, Diced, Shaved)

I wouldn't read too much into marketing blurbs when companies mention traditional etc., especially for mass market items.

I think the microbial rennet can actually be engineered now in such a way as to control for different characteristics, so what they seem to be doing is creating a modern version of whatever technique was used in the past, where presumably it would have used traditional rennet. Something similar is done for Dubliner cheese, and I would guess many others.

BTW if you use the form at the top of that page, you can click on the "Vegetarian" check box and then just press search to get the full list.

Thank you very much Peanut - I am delighted to find out at last. My son, aged 10, is adamantly refusing to eat any 'traditional rennet' cheeses and I have been trying to find a readily available Parmesan substitute.
