Would really like to bring my hubby to Ljubijliana for his birthday but trying to find the cheapest route. I know there are no direct flights from Dublin just wondering which would work out most economical route. Fly to a close city in Austria, Italy or Zagreb and bus/train it, lufthansa is mad expensive from Dublin, Air Adria hardly seems to fly at all from Dublin direct and have searched for a travel agent that may do a package deal but couldnt find one. Anyone been and what route did you go?

You could get a cheap flight to London and get an Easyjet flight to Slovinia.

Yeah think thats the best option indirect flights from here are crazy prices. I see Wizz Air fly from UK there too UK have so much choice :( it's one country I've heard is nice. Was going to take the option of flying to Triese if RA/AL flew there stay a few days and get train to Ljublijana but they don't fly direct there either.

Be careful with Wizzair. They seem to be cutting flights left right and centre.

Only a matter of time before the fold, they have never once turned a profit since they began operations in 2004.

Iirc ryanair fly to klagenfurt in austria, whereby you can get a train to innsbruck, wait 15 mins and get the train to ljublijana, bout 1-1.5 hours all told. Beautiful city, but do take time out to visit bled, its en route, and picture perfect. Should you have time, could I recommend the skocjamste jame (big caves) my highlight of a wonderful and pleasant country.

We flew to Treviso near Venice and we got the train from Mestre near Venice to Bled which as OP said is really beautiful and then a bus or train to Lubljiana which is about 45mins away.

My wife and I went there a couple of years back. We took the morning ryan air flight to stantead and then took connecting easyjet flight to ljubljana. This worked out well, the halt was for about 2-3 hrs. We travelled around slovenia and while coming back we went acorss to Italy and got ret flight direct to Dublin from Trieste.Slovenia is fantastic. It was one of the best holidays I have had.

As others have said, Ryanair and easy jet is an option. Depends when you book on Lufthansa, can be really expensive or you can get lucky. The cheapest by far is Aerlingus to Venice and get the bus to Ljubljana. Just watch the times on the bus, because at the moment there is only one direct bus per day.

Adria used to run direct flights during the summer but i don't think they are going to do so anymore.

Its also cheaper to rent an apartment in Ljubljana, than stay in a hotel.

Thanks for all the help it was a toss up between Slovenia and Norway but will have to do more saving for Norway mad expensive but easier to get to typical! Anyway think will do the ryanair easyjet option dont mind hanging around a few hours the Wizz air from Luton times were annoying everytime Ryanair got in the Slovenia flight was gone or else had to wait 7 hours  I have been to Italy loads and Austria twice so would prefer a direct from UK. The prices arent too bad for accommodation a lot of nice pensions/b&b's liking the Pension Berc in Lake Bled. Guess it is nicer to DIY your holiday there is very few places that do packages to Slovenia here and if they do I dont know if they would customise to your liking. It's great to have this ground work done before I book in Autumn. :)

We stayed in Alps pension and I could not recommend it highly enough The evening meal was top class like a 5 star restaurant here. It is a little out of town but it is peaceful and they give you bikes free of charge if you are in to that. You can look up the reviews in trip advisor .

Thanks for all advice Slovenia I think will defo be on the cards was doing up the sums. Norway too dear at the mo even to DIY it they have packages for Slovenia from Dublin but dont customise kinda like 7 days and only one day in the capital (which I want to see more of) The Ryanair - Easyjet option I had checked out too 2/3 hrs not a long wait in the airport. It seems a nice compact country. Did everyone do there only trips by public transport when in Lake Bled to see castle, caves etc or did you do a tour approx how much?

Bus transport is quite cheap there, but only good to go from one point/city to another. We hired a car for about 3 days and were able to explore a fair bit of the country. The rest of the time eg: Ljubjlana to Bled, Bled to Koper we travelled by bus. IF you do rent a car, then do not miss out on the Car train from Most na Soci, if you haven't done that sort of a thing before. IT is a great experience. Train tranport is also good, but we never really used it as bus was more handier. You can book tickets online or pay the bus driver. Buses don't run full. Bled is a small place and you can easily cover it walking around and spending time at the lake. Well worth spending a day.
