I have a Canon AE-1 (with manual, 50mm & 135mm lens, sunpak flash module CA-2D) which I never really got the hang of. I'm looking to get a digital SLR instead of this. Are there any shops that will trade in towards a new camera and how much should I expect to get?.. or am I just better off selling the camera on adverts or e-bay & putting this towards new camera?

Any advice greatly appreciated!! (including advice on where to buy/ what to buy etc.)

I too have a Canon AE1 in the wardrobe with a 50 nifty and a 100-200 zoom. ! No real value on them now unfortunately, check ebay etc.
I just kept mine and bought a DSLR this year. Took mine out of the wardrobe on Tue night and couldn't believe how small it looks in comparison to modern DSLR's. Maybe just maybe I will shoot a roll of film some day again !

Depending on where you are based I'd say adverts. The AE1 is a heavy camera so postage for ebay would be expensive. I know Conns in Dublin no longer trade in any film gear. Even in mint condition it wouldn't be worth more than €100 so maybe it would be nice to hang on to. I'm biased though as I love my AE1.

Pity, I was hoping it might even get me 100 or something towards my new purchase. I loved the idea of a film SLR originally but it's just not practical unless you have your own dark room so this made me lose interest in using it before I really even learned to use it properly.
Any tips for a beginners(-ish) digital SLR, or where to buy?

That's not strictly speaking true, I don't have a darkroom and I exclusively shoot film. I'd hang onto it anyhow. Just because you're shooting digitally doesn't preclude you also shooting a roll of film every now and again :)

No harm putting it on adverts and see if you have any interest. Might take a while. Try Gunnes if you're looking for advice. Conns can be ok depending on who you get but they can be pushy and a number of staff there talk down to women.

Camera Exchange on Georges St still sells (so presumably buys) 2nd hand film cameras

With regard to advice on buying a DSLR, really comes down to your budget.
