    Howye Lads,

My background is dairying which the bro manages full time. I worked in insurance and farm eve/wknds up until I packed in the insurance lark recently...hated the work. Always wanted to be a vet but never had capacity to get enough points to do it in UCD. So thinking at the wise old age of 29 going back to college to study it in Slovakia  Hoping to start Sept 12 months.

Therefore I need to earn a nice bit of €€€ over the next 1.5 years or so...considering of heading Oz to do harvest work to achieve my goal. Heard could earn $30/hr working 60hrs+ a wk reckon I could save a nice bit at that rate.

But hears my query do any of ye lads have contacts for people who done harvests out there and got on well etc?? Id be animal man first and foremost but well used to driving all sorts of farm machinery on a regular basis...

Look forward to yer responses, Thanks.

when i was out in Oz, i saw a lot of signs up for "HarvestAustrailia.com". This was in 2008, and one the lads in the group i was traveling with did it for 10 weeks. He loved it, but i'm not too sure if he saved that much money.

Try to get a job in one of the mines in Australia, work 3 weeks on 1 week off, money is good and you cant spend it as the mines are remote from anywhere. I know one or two people driving dump trucks and the likes there, the work is hard, its hot, long hours and its tough, but you can save. I dont have any contact but am sure google will find it for you.

be careful what you sign up for. when i was there one of the lads got stuck on a machine where the highlight of a day was when he got to turn it round every 4 hours. The first question i was asked was up to what horsepower machines have you driven. i said 200 and the reply was we have nothing near that small out here. 30 dollars an hour wont get you that far out there, dont get me wrong its alright but the mines will pull you in a lot more money. some sites will pay up to 50 but the graft can get hard.

I was gona suggest the very same,i have a friend working in newman mines north of perth, now he is in a fairly decent job ordenence survey, earning 100,000k aus dollars + but he was telling me the general labours etc can earn as much if not more than what he is on due to that they can do alot of overtime etc,can be easy to make good money there aslong as you dont get sucked into drinking away alot of your money like alot do out there

    Hey everyone,

Thanks for all yer replies. Defo crossed my mind that Id earn more in the mines but unless you have a contact already in a mining company its very hard to get into from bit of research ive done...the long hrs wouldn't phase me at all well used to it. Think most folk fly in and fly out of the mining regions working shifts of 3 wks on and 1 wk off...to be honest that would suit down to the ground as id be going over to earn money only and not Pi$$ it all away!

Sure if any of ye guys have contacts that could help out or provide advice just send a private mail...?

Thanks folks have a nice weekend :)

Dont know about the harvest but the brother is heading out to a mine in a couple of weeks , he had to show 3000 in his account for his visa and his ticket and was 1800 .

so really you would want 5 grand nearly!

I think the three grand is to show that you can carry yourself over there for awhile if you are out of work . I believe alot of people borrow it and put it in the account just for a statement and then give it back .
But the more you have going over I suppose the more you can relax and have the craic

    Well Moy
Just wondering what part of Oz did your bro land a job in the mines or how did he get in had he contacts? I believe its brutal hard to get sorted with any type job in mines...fair play to him.

Ya lad you'd need about $3000 minimum in your a/c to cover all the basis...and all the other expenses flights, visa, deposits when landed etc etc so all in you would need $5K.
