I am just about to buy a UK import form an Irish dealer. The car has a full service history and everything seems to be in order. ( So I am happy that the mileage is correct)
However the wife asked me did i run a Cartell report. Does anyone have any opinions on whether it is worth it?

Definitely - it'll tell you whether any finance is outstanding, and it may show accident damage. If the car hasn't yet been registered here then run a full HPI check - be sure to enter ALL details, including the V5 serial number and issue date. Did you verify the service history by phoning the garages who did the work? This is also critical.

Worth it for the finance check alone.

Not worth it unless the car is worth a fair bit.

For a sub 1K car I would not bother.

Ok I ran a car check through Motorcheck.ie and there appears to be an issue.

It states that the vehicle is a DSG but the car i viewed was manual. Could this be a typo mistake?

Also the mileage on the car is 69,000 miles. But the motor check says that at the last check it has 146,000 miles!!! getting a bit concerned now. Where do they get the readings from? Could it be a different vehicle. Already given a deposit on the car.

    Any advice???

I think you just got your money's worth from the check.

Did you run it through any similar UK reports ? The ones I've used maintain a good record of the mileage and would be very accurate I would guess before the car was imported here.

Call the garages who provided the service history and you'll have your answer.

    69,000 miles is only 110,000kms

Dont think so. I rang VW in the UK and they confirmed a number of additional service records for the car.

What do you reckon my chance of getting my deposit back from the Irish dealer?

They should be returning the deposit in full based on what you have found out so far.

Unless he's a fly by night dealer, the chances would be good.
Bring some proof though, if he is straight you will piss him off by accusing him of selling a clocked car.
If he's not straight, youre probably going to get the run around.

Are you saying uk garage confirmed higher mileage services. If so, you will have to get deposit back. Id also look at the uk v5 document. Does that say dsg? Even if walking away from it, id be checking the chassis number against the motorcheck report - out of interest.

I have not seen the V5 document. But the DSG transmission could just be a typo. The chassis number does match with the motorcheck report and the VW dealers in the UK.

The VW dealer in the UK confirmed a long list of service records for the vehicle that were not included in the cars service book.

the Vehicle is very clean and is sold with a full VW history. But "someone" appears to have alterned some of the mileage entries and removed a few pages from the book.
Thinking about it I think the front seats may have been changed hide wear.

I would name the dealer but I want to get my deposit back. If I dont get it back I will be posting it everwhere.

That alone would have me running a mile.

So having paid for a history report, you can now answer your own question. Was it worth it?

I actually think this is part of the reason UK imports should actually be worth more than Irish cars - they have a more transparent history. Stating the 50% or whatever of UK imports have something in their history is actually horse sh*t as 75% of irish cars probably do too, but it's much harder to find out !

OP. Please let us know how you get on. This reflects very badly on the dealer in question. Unless he returns your deposit and apologises and then re-advertises the car with the proper mileage, he should be named and shamed.

Well went out to the dealer this morning and he give me my deposit back.
He didn't even ask to see the proof I had of the vehicle Having twice the mileage.
I suspect this dealer regular does this.

    Just can't be too careful!

Is it back advertised for sale with the incorrect mileage?

I am not too sure I'd he has readvertised it again. I will keep an eye out.
But I just noticed the same vehicle on done deal with a different mileage all together!!!

Glad you got deposit back. Certainly, you can never be too careful. Its simply the easiest way to turn a large profit on a used car so the temptation is too great for many. As you have seen, a dealer appears to be casually selling a clocked car without fear, I can only imagine how many of the private imports on donedeal are clocked.
