Traffic lights timing

I spent an awful long time to go through a traffic light in Cork this morning; It was the Dennehy's Cross one, I was on Model Farm Road coming from CIT direction and intending to turn right onto Wilton Road in order to proceed to the N25.

Essentially, the green light for my flow of traffic only lasted about 5-6 seconds, while the green on the Wilton Road traffic lasted a good minute. As a result, only a couple of cars managed to go through the light at each cycle and an unbelievable tailback formed on Model Farm Road.

How does the light timing work? I noticed a few lights in the city seem to have sensors that detect where the most traffic is and give priority accordingly; However id doesn't seem to be the case for the Dennehy's cross one. What baffles me is that I drove through that intersection every morning this week and the light was fine until yesterday - green light lasting a goog 20-30 seconds on each side :/

They're programmed. Contact the council and lodge a complaint.

They do go haywire on a pretty regular basis and you have to wonder why because they're only on off switches,I would have thought they were bullet proof.

I was once in a lane coming from beach. There was 3 lanes, and the one I was in (turning left) had no sensors. It was 2 AM so there was no cars to trigger other lanes. So I ended up spending about 8 minutes on red light where there was no traffic at all coming. Literally empty road. So I drove on red (made sure no one around) from now on when I am on that junction at night time, I stand in middle lane and indicate that I am turning, switches green in seconds.
